Soda and beer are served in frosted mugs. Kitschy items like baseball caps and license plates line the wall, as well as sports memorabilia from Hernando High School. There’s a cool outdoor seating area with a window through which to place your order. This is a must-stop for us every year before hitting the Gulf Coast Classic Cluster Dog Shows in January, just up the road.

MEL’S HOT DOGS A feature on hot dogs would not be complete without including Mel’s. Since 1973, the Tampa landmark has been serving up Chicago style Vienna hot dogs on a steamed poppy seed bun. Almost 20 different hot dogs on the menu, including the Veggie Dog.With so many options, we always go back for the Chili Dog, fries and homemade creamy cole slaw. The service is friendly, and if you’re lucky enough to have your order taken by Mel Lohn, the Wizard of Wieners, you’ll be regaled by his own brand of humor. The small fenced-in outdoor seating area is on the side of the building. MEL’S HOT DOGS 4136 E. BUSCH BLVD., TAMPA. 813.985.8000 MELSHOTDOGS.COM
