Dog’s Road To Recovery After Alligator Attack In Jacksonville.

ORDER SOME TODAY • AticusOwn.com

It happened so fast, as these things usually do. Maiya, an eight-year-old Shiba Inu was out the door, running toward a nearby retention pond. Daniel Less, one of Maiya’s owners, heard what sounded like an explosion. When he looked up from cutting the grass, he saw Maiya in the mouth of a seven- foot-long alligator, splashing and shrieking. He ran over and wrestled his dog out of the alligator’s mouth. It wasn’t until he brought her home and rinsed the mud off her that Daniel and his wife Alice found the gaping wounds on Maiya’s back and legs. “A moment longer, and she would’ve been eaten,” said Alice. Since the attack, Maiya has had multiple surgeries, multi-

ple blood and plasma transfusions, and treatments in a hyper- baric chamber. She developed an antibiotic-resistant superbug that ate away at her flesh, most likely caused by bacteria in the water and in the alligator’s mouth. Michelle Sands, the veterinarian at Wells Road Animal

Hospital where Maiya was being treated, said she has never seen a case as bad as Maiya’s. “Mainly because most dogs don’t make it this far,” she said. “I can practice the best medicine. But, I need a dog with that spirit to live, like Maiya has.” The recovery process

is taking months and med- ical costs are climbing. Skin grafts will be needed. The Fleming Island family set up a GoFundMe accout to help offset the costs. “Just seeing what she means to my family. I’ve just left everything in the hands of the doctors,” said Daniel.
