St. Petersburg - RDO Day
Every September, the American Kennel Club promotes Responsible Dog Ownership Days. Dog clubs across the country host events and invite the public to watch demonstrations in Obedience, Conformation, Flyball, Agility and more. The Dog Training Club of St. Petersburg, established in 1955, hosted their event on September 10. We had the good fortune to, once
again, catch up with Shannon, a 14-year- old young lady, and her nine-year-old Beagle Gabe. We have been following Shannon and Gabe for many years, almost since she adopted him when he was four. He was a hunting dog and pretty good at it - sometimes. “He just didn’t have the drive,” Shannon told us. Consequently, he spent a lot of time in a crate. Shannon is a member of the 4-H
Club Crazy 4 Canines, hosted by the Dog Training Club of St. Petersburg. The youth club members are between the ages of eight and 18, working and learning more

about dogs while growing into active members of the community. The kids participate in events and county fairs throughout the year. Members become proficient in handling and training their canine partners. Shannon and Gabe are an impressive pair in the ring, whether it’s competing or demonstrating Obedience, Rally or Junior Showmanship. The entire time we were talking,
Gabe had his full attention on Shannon. Currently, Gabe is in training to be a serv- ice dog for Shannon. One of the real joys of covering stories for The New Barker is having the opportunity to meet people and dogs like Shannon and Gabe. Their relationship and devotion to one another epitomizes the human/dog bond.

Keenan Knopke, president of Curlew Hills Memory Gardens and Maddie, one of his two Dachshunds, invited the public to their annual Pet Blessing in honor of World Pet Blessing Day on October 15. Reverend Danny McDonald of North Bay Community Church individually blessed each pet. Afterwards, each pet received a certificate. Keenan presented checks in the amount of $1000 each to Canine Estates, a Palm Harbor sanctuary and rescue group and Rescue Pink, a 501(c)3 dedicated to raising money for free spay/neuter surgeries to pets whose families are unable to afford the procedure.
