Benito’s Story. Trust The Process. Tara wanted a dog to help her cope with her high anxiety. Her husband was support- ive, but suggested they should make sure Tara was just as trained as the dog. After researching various rescue groups, they found On The Wings Of Angels. “I liked that they rehabilitated dogs, trained them and then offered to train the families who adopted their dogs,” said Tara. She made an appointment with the
sanctuary in hope of meeting the dog the family had picked out. Ash was a smaller German Shepherd Dog. “He looked like a movie star,” said Tara. When Tara and her 12-year-old daugh-
ter Alexandra arrived, they were introduced to two dogs. Neither of the dogs was Ash. “I thought that I really wanted Ash, but On The Wings of Angels does a great job matching prospective adopters with their dogs.” She was encouraged to trust in the selection process. Tara and Alexandra fell in love, instant-
ly, with Betty, a Shiba Inu/Shepherd mix they were introduced to, but there was a good chance that she would be going with another family. “I was heartbroken.
Alexandra was crying. My mother said she would light a candle,” said Tara. As it turns out, Betty’s original adoption fell through. Tara, her husband, 14-year-old son Cade and Alexandra all attended the training ses- sions with Betty at the sanctuary.
last year. It has been a perfect fit. She listens to us, and is just an amazing dog,” said Tara. Tara’s mother-in-law also adopted a
Pomeranian from OWAR. “Mom attended one of the training sessions, saw Little Dog and they both instantly bonded,” said Tara. “Little Dog is mom’s lap dog.” It was clear that Betty had recently
given birth to puppies when she arrived at OWAR (without the puppies). “I noticed that she seemed very inter-
ested in other dogs during our walks. About six months after we adopted her, I contact- ed OWAR about adopting a companion dog for Betty.” That’s when the family first met Benny, one of the Miami 5. “We now call him Benito because Benny is too close to Betty.” Both Betty and Benito have helped

“She already knew all of the com-
mands. The trainer was teaching us. Betty joined our family a week before Christmas
Tara cope with her anxiety. “They’ve made me more focused, and calmed me down. We go to the dog park two to three times a week. Their unconditional love for the whole family has been an amazing experi- ence. I know some people will say how lucky these dogs are. But, really, we’re the lucky ones,” said Tara.
