About the cover artwork, Dog in Pink, in Evelyn

McCorristin Peters’ words. Once a year, I ask friends to send me photos of their dogs. This is in preparation for the dog events I attend to show my work, and also to help rescues and shelters. I do a lot of pet portraits, but then they go to their forever homes, so I need work to display. I usually end up painting all the photos because it’s hard to turn any of those gorgeous faces away. Each “skin family” receives a high reso- lution digital download of the completed portrait and are entered in a drawing to win a giclee print. Most of the time peo- ple buy the originals, but are kind enough to wait until my events are over before taking delivery of the original art. My friend and fellow artist,

Jean Blackburn has been to Cuba several times participating in artist exchanges and took the photo- graph on which I based the cover portrait, Dog In Pink. During one of her trips, she visited Camaguey, where dogs roam throughout the market. In Cuba there is a lack of resources available to assist peo- ple in taking care of their animals. Jean became involved with The Aniplant Project (TAP) which seeks to eliminate the suffering of Cuban animals through mass sterilization campaigns, public education, the promotion of animal health care, assistance to animal refuges, and hands-on intervention in cases of animal suffering. By taking and sharing the photographs, Jean helps to increase awareness for the program. The best part of my work

comes when it helps dogs in need, and their caretakers. Dog in Pink portrays the beauty, confidence and vulnerability of these dogs that rely solely on us for their wellbeing.
