While training is paramount, the other important thing
people forget when bringing home a shelter dog is that they need time to decompress. Think about it. The dog has been in a shelter or at a rescue with other dogs. Coming into a new home can be sensory overload for a dog. The noises are dif- ferent. The smells are different. People they’ve met prior to coming into their new home weren’t always nice. Give them time to adjust. Slowly introduce them to the other members of the family, especially pets. “A lot of times, people are so excited with their new
adopted dog. The first thing they want to do is take them out, show them off. Maybe even have a party. But, think about how you would feel in a similar situation. Then try to think about it from your dog’s point of view,” said Kristen. “They need a soft spot to land, to get out of the shelter experience and become acclimated to their new home. Tell them it’s okay.” Keeping a dog with Colt’s intelligence and high energy
drive stimulated, is challenging and ongoing. Routine is important. Kristen and Colt run two miles every single day. “When we go the park, Colt climbs the steps of the slide, then slides down,” laughed Kristen. There are many dogs currently sitting in shelters or avail-
able for adoption through rescue groups who have the same potential as Colt. It’s not the spirit in the dog. It’s the spirit in the human to want to bring out the best in their dog, what- ever that best might be. “Channel your dog’s energy into something positive,” Kristen reiterated. “And never stop learn- ing or growing with your dog.”
