Adoption Is Always In Style.
The daily grind of working in a shelter environ- ment, whether it’s as a volunteer or paid staff, may sometimes lead to inertia. Cleaning, feeding, walking and interacting with as many of the animals as possible in an effort to provide the care and socialization they need becomes priority. Of course, helping them find a family or individual who wants to adopt one of the shelter dogs is the ultimate goal. Yet, sometimes, with overcrowded shelters, the effort to creatively market the adoptables may not always take precedent. When professional photographer Marietta Losada
approached the Humane Society of Broward County (HSB) with her high-glam photo shoot idea, Cherie Wachter, Vice President of Marketing for the shelter, embraced it. “We love projects like this because it shows the public that there are all kinds of animals at the shelter.” The close proximity of the Miami Ad School and
the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale has been a boon for HSB and projects like this one. Ideas are presented all the time, but it has to be the right collaboration. “This was totally Marietta’s project, from start to finish. She was all about finding the stylist, clothing and pro- fessional models,” said Wachter. A bonus of the photo shoot, which took place at the shelter, was having the models post on their Instagram accounts throughout the day. “They were all very surprised at what you could find at a shelter,” said Wachter. Visiting a shelter to find a pet is not a one-hit
wonder. You have to keep coming back. “Sometimes you get lucky and fall in love with a dog on the first visit. But, if you have your heart set on something, keep checking back,” said Wachter.
