Wonwell beach (pronounced “won’ell”) – not quite sure where this is near, it seems to be in the middle of nowhere and the drive is an experience in itself (you’ve got to love a Devon lane for this one). I’m told that it’s somewhere between Bigbury and salcombe.

Another dog friendly beach but sandy this time and very expansive when the tide is out. Rock pools too at low tide. Park for free on the road and walk through the woods to the left to get to the far end of the beach, rather than going down the slipway to where it’s busiest. Great for safe swimming and a favourite with paddle-boarders because the beach is actually quite far inland if you look at a map. At very low tide you can walk over to Mothecombe if you don’t mind getting wet feet – but watch that tide because it comes racing back in and a marooning is very much a possibility. A bonus if you have a child who is being particularly tiresome I suppose. Who needs a naughty step when you can leave them on the other side of the water? I hope that provides food

for thought. But seriously, Waitrose sausage rolls, I can’t recommend them enough. There was one week this summer where I realised Rafa had had sausage roll every day for lunch.
