“I Can Hear You” Amazon Brings Artificial Intelligence Into The Home

This October represents another giant technology leap, with the uK launch of artificial Intelligence for our homes in the form the Amazon Echo . You may have read previous articles on voice technology the ability to talk to “Google” (android) or “siri” (iPad/ Phone) and have them find information for you or complete tasks by voice control. Echo brings voice technology into the home and takes it to a whole new level.

What is Echo?

Echo is a black cylinder - a twoway wireless speaker and microphone combination. It has a built in virtual artificial intelligence assistant called “Alexa” that responds to voice commands like “read me the news” or “play some adele”. It is designed to blend into the background of your home responding to every wish. You can ask Alexa anything - if she can answer your question or find the information she will speak right back to you.

Where does the Information Come From?

Amazon has been busy building a vast information hub which means that Echo has access to the near infinite computing resources of the company’s servers.

It can hear a question, send it to be processed, receive an answer and relay it in milliseconds.

Are “Smart Houses” the Future? There are likely to be many third party products and applications that link into Echo. Smart thermostats mean you just need to ask Alexa to turn the heating up 2 degrees. With smart TVs commonplace, you might be asking Alexa to change channel or turn the TV off. You can ask Alexa to play music, order food, find a train time and shop. In the kitchen, you can ask Alexa to put a timer on for 20 minutes the possibilities are endless.

Who’s Listening? Google are chasing Amazon, announcing details of their version called Google Home in early October. All of this may remind you of an Isaac Asimov novel and there are inevitable consequences of living in an instant information age. One of the most important is privacy. Alexa after all, is

a two way speaker that records and uploads your conversations. The Alexa App means you can look at the conversations at any time, but it poses a big question what happens to all of that data? Amazon echo is available from amazon.co.uk at £149.99.
