Welcome to Dart Harbour and Navigation Authority’s latest news, keeping residents and harbour users up to date.
SUMMER ROUND-UP It’s been another busy season here at Dart Harbour with many rallies and cruises choosing to make us their destination. Visitors have been keen to make the most of Dart Harbour’s nearby attractions while also enjoying the beauty and tranquillity of the river.
Dartmouth Royal Regatta This year’s Regatta was a huge success and we’ve had loads of fantastic feedback. For the first time, Dart Harbour entered a team in the rowing, made up of deputy harbourmaster Nick Clarance, Ben Mahon, Matt Stephens and Mike Clark and coxed by our finance manager Kate Distin and we were lucky enough to come first in our race. “We’re really pleased with the way
the regatta went,” said Nick. “It was an absolute pleasure and privilege to have helped run and support the regatta chairman and his committee with a fantastic regatta. “It wouldn’t be possible without
Dart Harbour’s great team; as usual Dart Harbour staff worked tirelessly over long hours to ensure the safety of river users.” There were many highlights from
Dart Harbour’s point of view such as the opportunity to meet some of Britain’s Rio Olympic sailors and provide them with transport across the river to the Royal Dart Yacht Club. HMS Ledbury and HMS Exploit
attracted much attention as did the Salcombe Lifeboat that was on the inside of the Town Jetty and open to visitors. It was great to see the air display and fly-pasts go off smoothly and we’re now working with the committee on safety issues to try and secure a sensible balance between air displays and local regatta events for 2017. It was very pleasing to see our
safety advice was heeded and water users responding to harbour staff instructions with many positive comments received.
Cruise ships and superyacht visits We’ve enjoyed several superyacht visits and a slight increase in cruise ship visits. Our first visit in April, the National Geographic Explorer, cancelled due to technical problems, however Dartmouth hosted its first formal embarkation later in the month, the Ocean Nova. In august the 86m THV Patricia visited Dartmouth on her way to Plymouth and in what is becoming a regular occurrence, the stunning Sea Cloud visited us again for the Regatta In addition, August saw the
ASTO – association of sail Training Organisations – visit the harbour as part of the Royal Dart Yacht Club’s 150th anniversary celebrations. a fleet of more than 20 vessels gathered in Dartmouth for training and social events prior to setting off on a race to Gosport.
Berth allocation We are currently carrying out our annual winter berth allocation – please do let us know as soon as possible if your boat will be staying in the water or if we can allocate your berth to another vessel.
Winter Berthing Unfortunately the summer season is now over and we would urge all owners and agents to check the mooring lines of boats left in the water are fit for purpose and double these up if necessary. Please remember to bail out tenders and take furling headsails off to prevent damage.
Safety warning We’d like to remind yacht owners to take heed of tides and resulting high and low water levels in the harbour after a Dufour 40 yacht narrowly avoided becoming holed on rocks at Blackness Point. The boat was rescued by Nick together with river officer Ben Mahon, who managed to tow the 40ft long yacht off the rocks to safety. Having reached the yacht as the tide was starting to ebb, there was just enough time to give instructions to the owners to put as much weight on the port side of the vessel as possible to reduce the draft. “With the owners and Ben hanging from the shrouds to help tip the yacht over further and reduce the draft, I managed to spin the yacht gently around, reversing it off the rocks,” said Nick. “Without our help the yacht would
have undoubtedly been holed and stuck on the rocks leading to a much bigger rescue operation and potential loss of the vessel. The owners, who want to remain
anonymous, added: “We’d like to express our sincere thanks to Nick for his quick reaction, professionalism and help.” And they added that they are
Sea Cloud II which visited Dartmouth this Summer
having the yacht checked, but realised afterwards how close it had come to being holed.
