FOLK AT THE FLAVEL – JOSIENNE CLARK AND BEN

WALKER Sat 08 Oct @ 7.30pm BBC Radio 2’s Folk Duo of the Year 2016, Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker bring their epic stories of love and loss to life with soaring vocals and exquisite guitar playing. Their performances have been described as ‘shimmering cathedrals of sound’. Whether interpreting words centuries old or singing her own authentic lyrics, Josienne’s jewel-like voice goes straight to the heart and Ben’s musical integrity and flair for arrangement are a perfect match, always allowing the songs themselves to be centre-stage.

RSC – LIVE -KING LEAR Wed 12 Oct @ 7pm King Lear has ruled for many years. As age begins to overtake him, he decides to divide his kingdom amongst his children, living out his days without the burden of power. Misjudging his children’s loyalty and finding himself alone in the wilderness, he is left to confront the mistakes of a life that has brought him to this point. Antony Sher returns to the RSC to play King Lear, one of the greatest parts written by Shakespeare in this, one of Shakespeare’s most epic and powerful plays. Broadcast live from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

DEVON OPERA – RIGOLETTO Fri 14 Oct @ 7.30pm This year Devon Opera is delighted to be offering Verdi’s Rigoletto. A tragic story revolving around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto and Rigoletto’s beautiful innocent daughter, Gilda. Sung in Italian, with a professional cast and piano accompaniment, under the direction of Ruth Bettesworth.

ROH LIVE - COSI FAN TUTTE Mon 17 Oct @ 6.30pm, Encore Screening- Sun 23 Oct @ 2pm How much do you love your partner? How much do you trust them? And can they trust you? Mozart’s classic opera Così fan tutte puts two pairs of lovers to the test – with great music but distinctly unexpected results. For this new production, director Jan Philipp Gloger creates a richly

theatrical world as the playground for this quirky comedy using all the sets, props and tricks of his trade to invent new scenes to challenge the lovers’ affections.

GEORGE EGG - ANARCHIST

COOK - COMEDY Sat 22 Oct @ 8pm one man….one hotel room… three courses George Egg spends a lot of time staying in hotels and some years ago, unimpressed with room service, he took matters into his own hands. Whilst performing a mind-bendingly original show of comedy-cum- illustrated-lecture George prepares a three-course meal on the equipment hotels unwittingly provide (iron, kettle, trouser press…), and if you want to, you can taste it at the end.

“a genius… He is the friendly face of anarchy, the anarchic face of food and the foodie face of comedy” SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY

LIVE TO SCREEN - BRANAGH THEATRE – THE ENTERTAINER Thurs 27 Oct @ 7.15pm Set against the backdrop of post- war Britain, John Osborne’s modern classic conjures the seedy glamour of the old music halls for an explosive examination of public masks and private torment. Rob Ashford directs Kenneth Branagh as the Archie Rice, with John Hurt as Billy Rice in the final production for Plays at the Garrick season.

MITCH BENN ‘DON’T BELIEVE A WORD’ - COMEDY Fri 28 Oct @ 8pm “I’m a skeptic. But don’t take my word for it. Or indeed anybody’s. For anything....” and this is the basic premise of Mitch’s new critically acclaimed show.

It’s a show that will

make you laugh a lot and think a bit as well as Mitch debunks myths, exposes nonsense and grapples with the very nature of knowledge itself extolling the virtues of an evidence-based approach to life .... with amusing consequences and of course a few songs along the way. ‘Britain’s leading musical satirist’ The Times
