Makers of bespoke furniture and sheperd huts from their workshop situated on the river Dart.
N
ick and Elaine Cooper have recently set up a workshop in The Old Forge, Dartside Quay, Galmpton, predom-
inantly as a furniture making business but now adding beautifully handcrafted Shepherd Huts to their repertoire. Influenced by the simplicity and the innate elegance of simple Georgian furniture and the beautiful functionality of American Shaker, their designs are timeless and never look out of place in any setting. This simplicity and func- tionality is typified in the making of thier shepherd Huts. The use of English and European hardwoods and best
quality Scandinavian soft woods are favourite but in mod- ern times modern materials and methods are appropriate and they use a variety of them. All their timber is responsi- bly sourced and suppliers are all FSC approved. Nick established a successful cabinet making business in Hampshire in 1994 quickly amassing an impressive client list with work being commissioned for some of the finest houses in the area and working for a number of well known architects. In 1998 he was invited to tender for work for Winchester Cathedral and over the next 10 years he completed many projects in the Cathedral itself and many other churches in and around the Winchester diocese. With a change of direction in 2009 Nick and elaine took Century failing country pub, whilst Nick was
on a 17th able to make a few commission pieces. The pub business
became the focus of their lives as they built the trade and ran it successfully for seven years, even winning the SH CaMRa ‘Pub of the Year’ in 2013. a desire to get back to the workshop using Nick’s
wonderful talent and with a love of the West Country, saw their move to south Devon in 2015. Lucky enough to have found a beautiful old workshop situated on the river Dart, they have already made great connections with the wealth of talented local trades, suppliers and small businesses that the South West has to offer. “We like to design our work but making things is what
we do and we are happy to make furniture and joinery from other designs or ideas. Working with a client to get it just right is very rewarding.” Please see Advert below.
