The first phase of CityCenterDC opened in late 2013 with additional openings continuing in 2014 and beyond. Construction continues at this 10-acre mixed-use devel- opment that The New York Times called “a modern-day Rockefeller Center.” This urban hub mixes hotel space, condominiums, offices, restaurants, shops and more – all within walking distance to the convention center and two Metrorail stations. Development will eventually include a Hilton Conrad Hotel, which is expected in 2018.


Unveiled this past spring, CityMarket at O is located one block north of the convention center, and is an upscale mixed-use development anchored by a Giant grocery store (opened fall of 2013) and it will feature restaurants, retail and the aforementioned new Cambria Suites hotel.


The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial, set to open this fall, will honor the men and women who have been injured in combat. It will be the first national memo- rial for living Americans, and is situated just off the National Mall, adjacent to the Capitol building.


The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture is slated to open in 2016. This muse- um will be the nation’s largest and most comprehensive collection showcasing African American life, art, history and culture. Visitors currently can get a sneak peak at future exhibitions while they’re on display at the National Museum of American History.


The National Law Enforcement Museum, also slated for a 2016 opening, is an extension of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The museum will be a place where all Americans can honor, remember and learn about the hardworking heroes who keep us safe and provide the backbone of our democratic society.


The Wharf is a Southwest Waterfront development proj- ect estimated at $2 billion that will include housing, hotel, retail, restaurants and entertainment. Its first phase is expected to open in 2017.


In transportation news, the long awaited Silver Line Metro Extension project is now well underway. It will con- nect Washington, DC to surrounding cities, including the retail mecca of Tysons Corner, Virginia. The line through Tysons Corner and on to Reston is now open, while the line connecting to Washington Dulles International Airport is expected to open in 2018. In the meantime, there is shuttle service between Dulles Airport and the Wiehle- Reston East station.


In addition, the first phase of the DC Streetcar project, H Street NE Streetcars, will facilitate travel for District resi- dents, workers and visitors by complementing existing transit options and creating neighborhood connections where they currently do not exist. It is anticipated that passenger service will begin in 2014 once the testing and certification process is completed.

The delicious collision of Mid-Atlantic craft food and drink culture with neighborhood redevelopment proj- ects continues in the second half of 2014 with hotly anticipated restaurant and bar openings.


Rural Society, which opened in July of 2014 inside the Loews Madison Hotel in downtown Washington, DC, is an Argentine steakhouse by Chef Jose Garces. The restaurant features wood-fired meats and fish prepared on a grill in the center of the restaurant, a South American wine list, whiskey and Italian aperitifs. Its cocktail program shows influences from Argentina and South America in general.


Penn Commons opened in August 2014, part of Passion Food Hospitality (DC Coast, Ceiba, District Commons). It is an upscale casual American eatery located in the Penn Quarter. Dishes include a brick- pressed chicken with rainbow chard, shrimp and grits and other American fare from chef Jeff Tunks. There are 50 beers on tap as well as 50 wines by the glass.


Brookland Pint is scheduled to open in the very near future. This beer-lovers pub in the Monroe Street Market area of Brookland, near the National Catholic Basilica, is coming from the same team that opened Meridian Pint. The new pub will showcase 20-plus American craft brews and offer salads, burgers and vegan options.


Erik Bruner-Yang, the maverick behind the lauded ramen shop Toki Underground, is partnering with Will Sharp of the clothing label DURKL and also coffee roaster Chris Vigilante to open a mixed-use restaurant inspired by an Asian night market to be called Maketto. This new business will be located near Toki on H Street NW and is expected to open by early this fall. Projected to open this September in the new CityCenterDC development, DBGB Kitchen + Bar will
