Friends of Jacksonville Animals (FOJA) hosted a Strut Your Mutt at Riverside Park on September 7, raising more than $13,000. FOJA is an all volunteer organization assiting the animals at the City of Jacksonville’s Animal Care and Protective Services shelter. Their goal is to reduce and eventually end euthanasia in Jacksonville. In 2007, 82.1% of the ani- mals entering Animal Care and Protective Services shelter were euthanized. In 2012, that number was down to 31.4%. FOJA raises money to pay for servic- es that the City of Jacksonville does not provide. For instance, to date, FOJA has paid for more than 600 dogs to receive heartworm treatment. Strut Your Mutt is a nationwide fundraising dog walk sponsored by Best Friends Animal Society out of Utah. Eleven cities across the country, including Jacksonville, participated in 2013, raising nearly $1.7 million for local animal welfare groups.
