Taking the Mystery Out of Raw. Do-it-Yourself Raw Food Diet for Beginners. –byYvonne Guibert
Part 3 in a series.
So, you’ve thought about feeding raw? Gotten past the controversy and safety issues of raw feeding? Maybe you’ve even tried a commercially prepared frozen raw diet or two. Now you want to try putting it together yourself?
4. Organic meats are best as they
include few if any toxins. If you can’t provide organic meats, look for grass fed and hormone-free. Every dog is different, so there is no “one-size-fits-all” diet that works per- fectly for every dog. You may need to tin- ker a bit with the recipe to find what works best for your dog in terms of com- bining proteins, fats and carbs. Once you find something that works well, remem- ber to rotate items regularly to achieve a good balance. The best thing about raw and home-prepared diets is the ability to use different proteins, fruits and veggies so your pet gets a well-rounded and bal- anced diet.

I’M READY. WHERE DO I BEGIN? I recommend that you start by replacing just one meal per day with a raw or

It’s easier than you think, but many
people worry that they may do some- thing wrong. Here are a few guidelines to get you started: 1. The calcium and phosphorous
ratio should be 1:1; bones are high in calcium and meats contain phosphorous; protein sources that are completely bal- anced include eggs, fish and tripe. 2. Do not exceed 15% organ meat
in the diet; try to keep liver and other organ meats to once per week, or very small portions with each meal. It is best to find organic sources as these organs are responsible for filtering toxins from the body. 3. When feeding pork or salmon,
always freeze the meat for a minimum of two weeks to minimize the small risk of any parasites.

home-prepared meal. It is best to feed a raw diet in the morning and commercial kibble diet in the evening, since it takes longer for your dog to digest the kibble than it does the raw. It's important to take small steps that you are comfortable with and adjust things slowly over time. Soon you’ll see it is fun to feed your pet raw and you will most likely see huge improvements in their health in just a short amount of time. The following is a basic starter recipe

that I recommend to customers who want to start their dogs on raw and/or home-prepared diets. The base recipe was developed by Nature’s Farmacy, makers of good “whole food” supplements. They call it their “Homemade Diet for Dogs.” I have added a few things to their base diet over time, so this is a more compre- hensive diet plan.
