These dogs are being kept in stacked wire cages, left in extreme hot/cold temperatures, with zero sanitation or human contact, rarely, if ever, seeing daylight. How these so-called “breeders” can power wash cages while the dogs are inside the cages, has Mary fighting mad and determined to see it end. So what has Florida got to do with Iowa puppy mills?
Florida is the second largest market for puppies produced in Iowa puppy mills. We do not have a large number of puppy mills, but hundreds of puppies are being shipped to Florida annu- ally. Our state has a large number of pet stores that obtain puppies from out of state puppy mills, deceiving consumers into believing their puppies are from local, trustworthy breeders. Florida’s Puppy Seller’s Disclosure Bill due for a vote in 2014. The bill would prohibit the sale of dogs and cats at flea markets, roadside stands and other outdoor locations. LaHay wants to remind Florida dog owners about the existing Puppy Lemon Law which she feels many Florida dog owners are unaware of. Florida’s Puppy Lemon Law protects the buyer if a pet develops an illness within 14 days of purchase. The law also gives the buyer a year to document claims against a seller based on hereditary and/or congenital diseases. Since the Iowa Puppy Mill Bill was passed in 2010, we
have seen the number of puppy mills in Iowa decrease from 450 to 246. Mary LaHay emphasizes that “we still have a long way to go." A step in the right direction is a recent new USDA regulation that requires dog owners who breed more than four females and sell their puppies online, must apply for federal licenses. The rule requires that either government inspectors or the buyers themselves, be allowed see the animals with their own eyes before the online transaction can take place. Mary LaHay has several suggestions for those who want to help stop puppy mills: •Help make your local pet store puppy friendly. •Make certain to vote. •Start local — write your mayor and/or commissioner(s). •Report any sick puppies — write to the better business bureau.
•If you must purchase a puppy, insist on meeting the parents beforehand at the location where they are raised to see their living conditions. •Adopt from your local animal shelter or rescue organization. U
