Surf City Surf Dog is an annual competition held in Huntington Beach, California. The first competition occurred in October 2009. In 2012, the Incredible Dog Challenge Dog Surfing Competition was held in San Diego, California. And as we reported in the summer issue of The New Barker, Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Wellington presented its first Surfs Up, Dogs com- petition in July as a fundraiser. The competition was held in Jupiter. Then, on November 2nd and 3rd, 27 talented pups competed for points during the Florida International Dog Surfing Championship in Cocoa Beach. Points were scored for length of ride and gen- eral ability. Survival of elimination rounds was paramount to placing. Local Chihuahua, Koa was the smallest surfer. The largest was Boynton Beach resi- dent, Booker D. Surfdog. The USA surf dog contingent, faced competitors from The Bahamas and Brazil. Additionally, the East was pitted against the West with the arrival of California residents, Abbie, Jedi and Faith.
Being a tripod isn't an obstacle for Cocoa Beach resident Pig, an awesome surf dog.
Seven-year-old Abbie, a rescued Australian Kelpie, holds the Guinness World Record for longest wave surfed by a dog. She lives in California.
Saturday’s Dog Pro Open whittled the competition down. The dogs were ranked by skill. One fea- tured matchup pitted Booker against Faith, both female Pit Bulls. Booker prevailed. The international heat fea- tured Bichon Frise Moses “Moe” from Brazil, USA’s Chihuahua Koa and Tibetan Terrier Waldo
from The Faith
Bahamas. Koa and Waldo tied. The overall winner was Abbie, a rescued
are Waldo (adopted from West Palm Beach animal control) who placed third. Abbie took first place.

Australian Kelpie. An added bonus of the event was that many of the adoptable dogs on hand weren't returned to a shelter. Paws For Veterans accepted candidates for service and therapy training from the Brevard County Animal Shelter and the SPCA of North Brevard, while several others were adopted. American IDogs held auditions and performed on Saturday. The DiscConnected K9s did shows all weekend. Ultimate Air Dogs offered dock diving amidst the throng of vendors and exhibitors.
