Raw Versus Kibble? Here Are Some Viable Options. –by Alexandria Creasy

When thinking about feeding raw there are a few things one must take into consideration. Will this benefit my ani- mal? How hard is it to feed? And, will I be able to stomach it? From my point of view, the answer is yes to all three questions. Though raw does come with a distinctive yuck-factor for some, there are substantial benefits for feeding raw to your dog. For those humans who can’t stomach it, you are not alone, and so there are options. Feeding raw food to our dogs has quickly taken off in the companion animal field. I have personally seen it work wonders on dogs and cats who suffer from allergies or other medical conditions. Non-processed food is digested more easily through the digestive tract, allowing for more absorbtion of nutrients that are needed. Primal is a raw food company that does something unique. The percentage of meat to veggie and fruit ratio is formulated depend- ing on the meat source used. This provides a more natural type feeding. Primal also uses mainly organic fruits and veggies in their foods along with antibiotic and steroid free meats. The

raw frozen formulas from Primal offer the convenience and benefits of a well- balanced, safe and wholesome raw-food diet without having to grind, chop, measure or mix the ingredients yourself. The Honest Kitchen makes a dehydrated raw

food for cats and dogs. It’s perfect for those who may not have the stomach to handle raw meats. All you need to do is add water. The Honest Kitchen makes a wide variety of flavors that are highly palatable for animals. This company has some of the strictest regulations on the market when it comes to the agree- ments they have with their farmers. They are not allowed to use GMO or engineered recombinant DNA products. Contracts are renewed yearly so that they can make sure standards are kept at the highest levels. The Honest Kitchen guarantees that their products are human grade, so much so that a human actually samples the batch before it goes to market. Now that’s quality assurance in my book. Raw or dehydrated raw are fantastic feeding options for

companion animals, though it doesn’t always fit within every- one’s budget. You have to do the best for your pet within your budget. These foods give you that option. What If I Want to Feed Kibble? There are a couple of dry foods on the market that stand

out from the rest, in my professional opinion. They give owners the unique ability to help animals who suffer from allergies without doing raw. Zignature is a limited ingredient dry dog food, meaning only one unique protein and one carbohydrate are included.

Zignature only coats their kibble with the oil unique to the par- ticular meat source used, whether it’s trout, turkey, duck or lamb. Absolutely no chicken products, including egg, are used in Zignature, making them one of the select few foods on the market to be completely chicken-free. Chickpeas and peas are used as a binding agent of the kibble, also making this food free of potato, rice and grain.

Wild Calling is a dry food that is newer to the market and

has some impressive, unique qualities. They offer a line of limited ingredient food for animals who suffer from allergies. Remember, variety is the spice of life. Some of the things that make this food stand out from the rest is that they coat their food with dried turkey liver. This drastically increases the palatability of the product. One of the best things this product offers is that the live culture Bacillus subtilis is added to the food after it has been processed, adding a probiotic to your dog’s diet. No grains or gluten are in Wild Calling. And another good point - they are very reasonably priced. Solid Gold has been around for quite some time. Dog

owners love Solid Gold for the healthy ingredients, grain-free formulas and decent price. Many folks notice shinier coats, clearer eyes, better muscle tone and increased energy levels after switch- ing to this food. The food formulas always contain a protein source as their first ingredients, and do not contain corn, wheat or soy.U
