Sylvia, the AR Gurney Play Comes to Lakeland.

The setting is New York City. A middle-aged, married man finds himself having a mid-life crisis. The object of his affection is Sylvia, a dog he finds in the park. When Greg brings Sylvia home, his wife Kate reacts very negatively to the dog. As Greg becomes completely obsessed with Sylvia, Kate fears her marriage is falling apart. She is at odds with Sylvia, as each of them is committed to seeing the other defeated.

Despite this description, the story is tender and sweet with plenty of come- dy that anyone who lives with a dog will appreciate. The play was first pro- duced in 1995 at the Manhattan Theatre Club running for 167 per- formances. The cast included Blythe Danner as Kate, Charles Kimbrough as Greg and Sarah Jessica Parker as Sylvia, the dog. The part of Sylvia is always played by an actress. We saw this play a few years ago at the Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota
