If you visit during Mardi Gras season, eating King Cake is

de rigueur. The traditional crown-shaped cake dates back to the 12th century, where it was baked and eaten on the eve of Epiphany to commemorate the visit of the Three Kings to the Christ child. The cake is eaten between Twelfth Night (the eve of Epiphany) and Fat Tuesday (the beginning of Lent), and if you receive the slice with the hidden plastic baby, you’ll be responsible for providing the King Cake at next year’s festivi- ties. Eat carefully and don’t share this, or any of the spicy Cajun foods, with your dog. LAGNIAPPE FORYOU ANDYOUR DOGS.

Like the whipped cream and cherry atop a hot fudge sundae, lagniappe means “a little something extra” and Lake Charles has lagniappe to spare when it comes to fun for four-legged visitors. The city park at Lake Prien is a Cajun canine favorite, with lovely lake views, lots of green space, and amenities that include waste stations and doggy water fountains, as well as a covered picnic area. Explore the quaint bungalow shops in the Cottage Shops

Cultural District, just off Ryan Street. The restored houses spread over several blocks are home to trendy clothing bou- tiques, bakeries, and local arts and crafts. While you may not be able to take your dog into all of the shops, many have spacious porches where your pooch can take a break while you browse. Stop by the Louisiana Market for authentic foodstuffs, local art, and unique gift items from Southwest Louisiana.
