EVERY END IS THE SHALLOW END! Council bosses have come under fire for splashing out on a pool that is six feet shallower than the one it replaced. Angry swimmers using the 4ft deep pool have complained of bruised knees, battered elbows and banged heads. The 25m long pool at Johnstone Sport Hub replaced the 10ft deep Johnstone Baths in the Renfrewshire town, Scotland.


Having opened in July, Renfrewshire Council said only two accidents have been reported since then, which is “well below the average at swimming pools for that length of time”.


A spokesman said the pool was designed using “industry standard guidelines backed by sportscotland”.


ST COLUMB’S SWIMMING POOL PLANS PROGRESS Plans for an exciting new £8m sports campus in St Columb’s Park, Londonderry - now including an approved 25metre swimming pool - have progressed with the placing of an application for the development with the local planning office.


Last year plans were lodged for the new development but the swimming pool element was omitted pending a public consultation.


Now a full application has been submitted for


“replacement and relocation of multi-purpose sports leisure facility including community cultural and assembly use and provision of 25metre swimming pool and learner pool with ancillary accommodation”.


The plans - if they come to fruition - will revolutionise sports provision in the area.

5557 LINER CHALLENGE – THE HARDEST YET?


After almost 40 years of experience, and even with the help of high-tech CAD systems, the Plastica team were recently faced with one of their most difficult liner requests. Steve Bowden, from Bucks Swimming Pools, approached Plastica to undertake the complex calculations and production of a domestic pool liner for a very challenging pool. Dan Cranage led the Plastica team through the immensely tricky task. He admitted that there were many versions of drawings and modelling to get the design right. “I have seen some odd shapes and sizes but nothing like this,” he added.


Plastica rose to the challenge. A delighted and relieved Steve reported: “I fitted the liner in about an hour without any issues at all. I expected a lot of problems with this one!” Dan had high praise for the team who expertly designed and then welded the jigsaw-puzzle pieces of liner together.

The pool after EXPORT MARKETS KEY TO GETTING OUT OF RECESSION


Country Leisure are confident that they can export their way out of the recession having already exported products to more than 50 different countries.


The business and its sister company Loyal Grove Leisure in Staffordshire jointly employ 50 staff and make GRP glass reinforced plastic and mouldings for swimming pools, water slides, features and play equipment.


Managing Director Malcolm Brown says firms have nothing to fear from exporting, the appeal of overseas markets has never been greater and he encourages others to explore the opportunity.


The business currently has contracts in Indonesia, Singapore, Canada, Holland, France, Germany, Iran, Vietnam, Czech Republic,


Australia, Spain, Dubai and Egypt and the overseas market now accounts for 40% of their annual sales and this is expected to grow to 60% over the next two years.


The company’s largest overseas market is in France where they have supplied large water slides and flumes to more than 600 camp sites and leisure centres during the past 16 years.


“We do experience less red tape trading overseas than in the UK, although the installation we completed recently in Australia involved obtaining working visas and getting certificates for the materials in accordance with the country’s standards which we gained useful experience from. With this particular contract the payment was against a letter of credit prepared by Natwest


Bank which was paid once the goods had left the UK port on receipt of shipping documents,” says Brown. “Our philosophy is to manufacture a good quality product for a reasonable price and to deliver when the customer wants it. I am a strong believer that you make your own good fortune, you have to be tenacious and have the courage to invest and be proactive,” he adds. In the early days the company took part in trade exhibitions. It has not had to do that for at least 13 years as nowadays most of their business comes via a network of distributors and agents it has built up.
