5559 IN BRIEF JOLLY GEL CLEANS UP IN THAILAND

FOREST HILL POOLS REOPENS

Forest Hill Pools leisure centre in Lewisham, South London has reopened its doors following an £8.9m

redevelopment of its facilities. Designers Roberts Limbrick Architects worked with builders Willmott Dixon and operators Fusion Lifestyle on the project and the council owned venue.

The improved facilities now include a 25m swimming pool with spectator area plus a 16.7m learner pool.

As part of the project, the Victorian frontage of the historic venue which first opened in 1884 has been kept. Peter Kay, Chief Executive of Fusion Lifestyle, said: “We’re looking forward to re- establishing the centre as the iconic leisure facility in the community.

“We recognise our

responsibility to look after this treasured local asset and we look forward to working with the community to ensure that the pools have a long, successful and sustainable future.”

WELSH POOL ‘DEAD IN THE WATER’

Attempts from the local community to save Treherbert Swimming Pool have been described as “dead in the water” after a decision to demolish the site was finally rubber-stamped in late October.

Despite spending over three years trying to source funding, campaigners resigned themselves to defeat when Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s cabinet voted unanimously to bulldoze the dilapidated site, which has remained derelict since 2009.

Established in 1982, Pool King Inter Co., Ltd is a Thailand based importer and exporter of swimming pool and spa equipment. Over the years, strong team work, motivated staff and happy customers have allowed them to expand their business to cover most countries in South East Asia and the Pacific Region and the company has over ten branches in Thailand supporting their customers’ needs. The company has worked with Bob Kent at Mineral Supplies International (MSi) for a number of years but were amazed at how one product, Jolly Gel, performed. “Bob Kent, from MSi sent me a sample box of Jolly Gel with the explanation of how well it treats rusty water. At first, I wasn’t convinced such a small product would be able to turn a deep discolouration of rusty

water into sparkling water overnight, but I couldn’t resist his intentions for Pool King to have the best products and be an exclusive supplier, so I ordered hundreds of boxes with the goal of selling them to users who had used the product before,” said Managing Director Mrs Rasinee. She continues: “My first experience using Jolly Gel came when working with a Bangkok pool builder. They were completing a large swimming project in Bangkok which contained 2,500m3 of water. They had filled the pool directly from the main city water supply in Bangkok. The property owner told me that he had VIP customer coming to inspect the house worth US$3.5m tomorrow evening, so he was expecting the pool to look at its best. “I went to the site and was horrified to find the water was heavily discoloured. Panic set in knowing that the VIP was coming the next day. With my company reputation on the line and having worked with and trusted MSi for many years, I decided to put ten boxes (40 pieces) of Jolly Gel into the strainer pump at 4pm and left the filter system on overnight.

“I was so keen to know the outcome, I couldn’t sleep. I called my assistant first thing in the morning and it was nothing short of a miracle. I couldn't believe it, the water was sparkling blue and had only thin dregs at the bottom of the pool! Jolly Gel had worked and saved me from an embarrassing situation.” Since then, Pool King Inter Co., Ltd has gone on to sell Jolly Gel to other Indochina countries including Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia.

DURABILITY OF WATERCO FILTERS MAKES THEM A KEY COMPONENT IN RUSSIAN PROJECT’S EXTREME CONDITIONS

Russky Island off the coast of Vladivostok, Eastern Russia is well known for its extreme climate – in fact the seas around the island are frozen for six months of the year. So when the Russian Central Government made the decision to construct a desalination plant there, it needed to be purpose designed for the severe weather conditions. Russky Island was for many years a closed area, but in 2007, it was chosen as the site for the 2012 Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders’ Week (APEC) – and large- scale construction commenced. An integral part of this major development was the building of a new 10,000 m3/d seawater reverse- osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant to support the drinking and process needs of the area.

A global water solution provider was contracted to provide the turnkey design/build desalination

project, which purifies over 2.6 million gallons of seawater per day. Given the harsh environment, products required for the plant had to be specifically designed to be hard wearing and long lasting. Following a tender process, the contract for providing the filters was awarded to Waterco to provide 12 horizontal filters. These 7-bar rated filters were made using the latest in fibreglass winding technology and use the highest grade of non-corrosive materials.

“Our client required a filter with a large surface area and a corrosion resistant design,” explains Tony Fisher of Waterco Europe. “Fibreglass filters are perfect for seawater applications as they do not corrode like steel or even stainless steel. “Waterco’s filters are designed with no metal to water contact and are suitable for a long service life due to the high pressure rating.” To provide the filters, Waterco

overcame two significant challenges – the short lead time requested coupled with the logistic challenges of shipping 12 filters safely to site. “Our ability to manufacture filters in three plants around the world allowed us to choose the best location in order to best suit the delivery time of the project,” Tony explains. “We chose to manufacture the filters in our Malaysian facility, as the proximity to the project gave us the best delivery time and most economical shipping cost for our customer.

“Our filters are created with reliability and durability firmly in mind and provide flexible solutions to the many challenges that go with treating higher volumes of seawater. Russky Island was a perfect application.”
