www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk INSULATE TO REDUCE BILLS

Every new indoor swimming pool requires good insulation in order to satisfy the 2010 edition of Part L of the Building Regulations. The installation of Part L compliant insulation will also help to reduce heating bills and keep the pool warmer for longer.

XPOOL insulation from Certikin is closed cell and has a very high compressive strength making it able to withstand the long-term static loads that you would expect to find in a swimming pool.

XPOOL insulation boards have excellent life-long thermal performance and very low water absorption (<0.7% after 28 days), allowing them to be installed below the concrete slab or behind retaining walls without the need for a damp proof membrane. They are also 100% recyclable. For projects that require insulation products to have a global warming potential (GWP) of less than

5 then Certikin also offer a CO2 blown product, XPOOL ECO, which is Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) Pol 1 compliant.

LOW VOLTAGE DRIVE SAVES ENERGY FOR LEISURE CENTRE AIR HANDLING UNIT

A leisure centre in Sittingbourne, Kent is set to reduce the costs of air handling by nearly 25% for its swimming pool following a trial with an ABB low-voltage drive. An expected £4,000 saving will give a payback period of well under a year. The Swallows Leisure Centre has three pools in its pool hall, the largest of which is 25m long. Serco Leisure operates the centre on behalf of the local authority and was concerned by the energy use of the air handling. To deal with a condensation problem in the pool hall, this unit was being run continuously, with no control over its output.

Serco asked Mid Kent Electrical Engineering Group (MKEEG), an ABB Drives Alliance member, to investigate the issue. Monitoring the power consumed by the existing 22 kW fan over a week showed an average consumption of almost 19.5 kW.

The star-delta starting system was replaced with a 22 kW ABB standard drive for HVAC set at 30 Hz from 10pm to 6.20am and full speed during the day. Average power consumption was reduced

to 14.8 kW which equates to CO2 emissions being cut by 22 tonnes a year.

The savings indicated above are based on an electricity cost to this leisure centre of 10p/kWh. Russel Kimpton of MKEEG said: “There is further scope for savings during the day. Once the full-time drive is installed, its speed could be scaled back, in say 5% steps, to a point just before we start to see the condensation problem again.”

LEISURE CENTRE PART OF FIVE YEAR PLAN TO REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT

Teignbridge District Council in Devon has installed new energy efficient pool heater boilers to make its Newton Abbot Leisure Centre more eco-friendly.

The new gas boilers, used to heat the popular swimming pool, will save 102.3 tonnes of carbon emissions each year making the leisure centre more energy efficient and cost effective. It is all part of Teignbridge District Council’s effort to help the environment, save money, reduce its own carbon footprint and still give customers the same high standards of service.

The replacement of the old boilers is just one project the Council has successfully completed as part of its commitment to reducing energy costs and tackling climate change through its recently approved Energy and Carbon Reduction Plan 2012 - 2017. The Council is committed to reducing energy costs and doing its

bit for climate change and is one of the smallest districts in the country to have worked in partnership with The Carbon Trust. Together, they have established a five year Energy and Carbon Reduction Plan which tackles direct and indirect carbon emissions across the authority’s property and estates portfolio. The new boilers at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre will save £24,307 a year and after six years will have paid for themselves.
