TAKING GOOD CARE OF MIDDLE EASTERN POOLS

Belcare, the facilities management division of Middle East swimming pool specialists Belhasa Projects, has claimed a 100% increase in business over the last year. It says customers want pools not just built but maintained. The business performance is driven by increased interest from owners of private villas in Dubai for facilities management services besides the maintenance works for swimming pools.

The company has also launched a 24 hour customer helpline to provide service for maintenance of swimming pools and landscaping work. Jaideep Mathur, Business Unit Head of Belcare said: “Although the company has been providing swimming pool and landscape maintenance services for more than 30 years, Belcare was started only three years ago to service villas in gated communities and select locations in Dubai.”

Belhasa Projects was established in 1980 and employs more than 200 staff and has a labour force of nearly 2,000. The company has won the SPATA trade association award for best international pool eight years in a row.

FIGHT FOR MORE FLEXIBLE DISABILITY ACCESS RULES

Local disability rights activists in the United States are protesting against a number of high profile hotel and pool groups who it says are failing to give a firm commitment to make their swimming pools accessible to people with disabilities.

One of the key issues of the Americans with Disabilities Act is whether hotels and other facilities will have to install fixed, permanent lifts, a move that requires hiring a contractor at a cost of as much as US$6,000.

Pool owners were hoping to comply with the rules by purchasing less costly portable lifts that could be wheeled out to the poolside as needed. An ADA protest campaign is gathering strength and could end with a special delegation on Washington this autumn – just as the law is supposed to be fully adhered to.

advantages over conventional chlorine – they are gentler on the skin and hair than traditional chlorine pools and pool owners don’t have to purchase, store and handle harsh chemicals, so

maintenance is easier, more convenient and cheaper too. Across the country, chlorine pools are being converted to salt water and today there are more than 1.4 million salt water pools in operation nationwide. An estimated 75% of all new in-ground pools are salt water, compared with only 15% in 2002.

In salt water pools, chlorine is produced as water passes through the generator. As the water exits the generator and enters the pool, the sanitising chlorine reverts back to salt, and the process repeats itself, conserving salt and keeping sanitiser levels balanced. There have been questions about the effect of salt water on pool construction materials, decks and surrounding structures. When pools are properly constructed and normal maintenance is followed, salt water has no effect on pool finishes, equipment and decks. Most materials are suitable for salt water pool construction, and most kinds of stone and decking materials will last if treated and sealed properly and periodically rinsed off.
