SPN OCT 2012 Winterising
away. Now is the time to advise on replacement of any equipment that is not up to par and can be ordered ready for delivery when the pool is re-opened in the spring.
• Remove skimmer weir and basket and store in dry conditions.
• Using dry acid and dry alkali as necessary adjust the water to between 7.2 and 7.6. Shock the pool to at least 10ppm using shock granules or liquid chlorine. The level must hit 10ppm or the ‘shock’ will not take place.
• Add long life algaecide and allow pump to run for at least eight hours to circulate fully and distribute the chemicals.
• Ensure exposed pipe work, pumps, heaters etc are completely drained down. If the pool has an automatic chemical feeder, tablets should be removed and the system carefully flushed through.
• Equipment that cannot be removed from the plant room should be sprayed with a moisture repellent spray to give added protection through the closed season.
• Finally a winter cover should always be fitted to prevent leaves and other algae encouraging ‘foodstuffs’ entering the pool.
Hard winters are not as common as they once were but if a severely cold snap does strike it can cause real harm to liner, painted or tiled pools. It is relatively simple to avoid damage by tying a row of plastic containers that have been half filled with sand or anti-freeze across the middle of the pool. This will act as a frost and ice break and relieve pressure on the pool sides should ice form. Never break up surface ice as the sharp edges could damage liner pools.
A choice for all seasons – Clear 'n' Clean from MSI
The pool should be checked regularly (every four to five weeks or so) to ensure that the pH remains within the parameters and that the chlorine level does not drop below 5ppm. Long life algaecide should also be topped up if necessary for example if there is heavy and prolonged rain.
CHEMICALLY HELPFUL HIBERNATION Bayrol’s Puripool is a concentrated liquid for the hibernation of filled open air pools. The spring clean of the pool is substantially assisted by Puripool as it forms a film on the surface of the pool walls thereby preventing adhesion. This is of particular help in preventing the formation of algae. Puripool is free from phosphates. Certikin has some of the best winter chemical offers in the marketplace ready for when your customers’ pools go into hibernation. Aside from some not to be missed offers on the Fi-Clor range, Certikin’s economical and no- nonsense Swimfresh range will also be subject to promotion.

Blue Horizons Ultimate Winter
Time from Complete Pool Controls is a long-life copper free algaecide formulated to prevent algae growth in outdoor pools during late autumn, winter and early spring. Ultimate Winter Time also helps minimise the likelihood of stains and scale deposits during the closed season. Although the process is relatively straightforward, many pool owners will require guidance, so it is useful to be on hand to advise on which type of treatment to use. “It is so important to take action in autumn for at least two reasons,” explains Mark Ramsden of Complete Pool Controls. “Firstly, algae and stain prevention is more cost effective than a spring cure, and will also mean it will be quicker to get the pool ready next year. Secondly, as the temperature falls, the pH will become lower, so it is prudent to raise the level.” Complete Pool Controls recommends two different treatments to its customers. “It is quite simple – all that is needed is a sequesterant to help resist leaf/metal staining during winter,” continues Ramsden. “Winterisers generally fall into two categories – polyquats and copper products. The former generally have wider compatibility and can be blended with useful sequesterants. Copper is usually a standalone product. It is more pH sensitive and cannot be used with biguanide and some other systems.”
“Covering the pool is vital whether this is by simply shutting up an automated cover, making sure it is manufactured to withstand winter temperatures, or a debris cover...”
