‘COST SAVINGS TECHNOLOGY IS WHAT REALLY MATTERS’ SAYS GOLDEN COAST BOSS
Functionality and features have to be balanced out by costs and efficiency when it comes to deciding what matters to people looking to buy hot tubs.
That’s the view of Jamie Adams, Managing Director of Golden Coast, exclusive UK distributors of the Marquis Spa United States manufactured hot tub range. Every year more hot tubs become available, each with more features than the last one, from lighting and sound, to water therapy and storage solutions, energy efficiency and water filtration.
“We met Tony Welsby at Spa Crest and were impressed with the organisation, so took on the dealership for our area and now run a showroom with six Spa Crest units on display.
Customers who kept asking Stephen French of Brackley based Mosaic Swimming Pools if he could sell them a hot tub alongside their new pool was a key factor in him becoming the latest Spa Crest brand dealers in the market.
“The reason I decided to include hot tubs in our company’s product offering was because I’m often asked by my clients if I sell them as they were thinking of adding one to their new pool projects. I also employ a son-in-law who has two years experience in the hot tub industry so that, along with my many years’ experience in pools and concrete bespoke spas, it made good sense to sell a range of hot tubs as well,” said Stephen. “We searched through all the various dealerships and spa types and decided on Spa Crest as the spas are of a very high quality but a price that’s very competitive in today’s market. It was important to us that it was a quality American made hot tub, as I did not want to sell a poor quality range. There are many other spas built around the world but not to the same high standard.
“We are also very happy to be working alongside Crown Buildings and have a timber spa enclosure bespoke designed by Crown and Mosaic Pools in our showroom with a fully working hot tub inside.” Tony Welsby of Spa Crest Europe said: “We’re delighted to have Stephen and his team on board in an important part of the country for us. They have an existing very affluent client base who have already expressed an interest in adding a hot tub to their pools, and Mosaic are also keen to build the business beyond there.”
The new appointment coincides with the opening of a dedicated showroom in Botolph Claydon on the Buckinghamshire / Northamptonshire border which, as well as displaying six models across their range and a stunning Crown building, also sells chemicals and associated leisure products and accessories.

But what really matters to people looking for a hot tub? Jamie Adams said: “More and more people are considering either downsizing their hot tub or choosing a smaller hot tub as their first purchase. As well as having the benefit of lower running costs they are also cheaper than larger tubs. Although it limits the number of people who can enjoy it at any one time, some offer the same level of functionality and technology as larger models.”
He added: “We need to be tuned in to what is making consumers tick. Yes, I am sure that a docking station, drinks holders and back lit waterfalls are all high on the wish list, but I am also sure that efficiency, maintenance, running and repair costs are also up there. Rather than getting blindsided by the technological advancements we need to make sure we focus on the technology that really makes a difference in the long term, that of cost saving, that’s the real area of hot tub technology we need to focus on and develop.” The Marquis Spirit has all of the same features as the top end Euphoria but is half the size and almost half the price. The Spirit is one of the highest spec smaller spas, boasting whirlpool hydrotherapy, Frog inline dosing system, Marquis’ patented tri-zone
valve system and HK-40 jets. All this for an RRP of £6,345 (inc VAT), compared to costs in the region of £10,000 for its larger counterpart. It’s not just the cost of purchase and the cost of running that is a consideration for consumers, the cost of repair is also a key factor. For many years there has been a problem with some spa maintenance, namely faults which could be caused by one of a number of parts. The cost of replacing these parts could hit many hundreds of pounds and they may not resolve the issue.
New to the market, and according to Golden Coast, taking the market by storm, is the Balboa Revolution Spa Pack which comes as standard with E-Series Spas. This compact and energy efficient service pack makes it quicker and easier to diagnose and repair faults. The spa pack can be retrofitted to most spas and could greatly reduce repair bills. At just over £800 this could save consumers a lot of money, both in terms of labour and spares.
