Winterising OCT 2012 SPN

49 TRICKS OF THE TRADE FOR CLOSING DOWN A SWIMMING POOL

Here’s a few tricks of the trade when it comes to getting your pool through the winter without incurring costs next year: • When you clean the pool, scrub the water line. It is here that oily deposits accumulate – often attributable to bathers with suntan lotion! There are proprietary liquid cleaners you can buy which will do the job perfectly.

• Lowering the level of water in the pool is not necessary if you are able to check the level through the winter and let some water out if required.

• Antifreeze precautions may not be necessary on less exposed situations and especially for salt water pools.

• If the pool equipment is inside, you don’t need to drain the system. • An antifreeze precaution for undrained systems in very cold weather is to run the pump for an hour or so in the early hours of the morning – taking water from the bottom of the pool.

• In the early spring, before opening the swimming pool add some more algaecide or chlorine as a top-up.

There are water treatment products on the market which help to troubleshoot with any winterising problems you might have. Lo-Chlor Chemicals have been providing solutions for swimming pool and spa problems for the last 20 years!

Its range of specialty chemicals is now manufactured in the UK enabling them to support pool owners faster.

There are Lo-Chlor products to fit every water threat – from standard water maintenance chemicals to phosphate removers, water clarifiers, and products which will deal with algaecides. Lo-Chlor runs its own trouble shooting service for pool owners who are not sure what action needs to be taken.

Developed some ten years after Lo-Chlor Pool Algaecide, Lo-Chlor Winteriser Algaecide was developed to specifically to kill and control algal blooms during winter. Utilising the original organocopper complex, Lo-Chlor Winteriser Algaecide ensures pool owners can maintain an algae free (and stain free environment) over the winter months. It’s a product which enhances chlorine production and chlorine efficiency and minimises maintenance during winter. It includes a non-staining formula, out performs all other winter algaecides and lasts for up to 90 days. Clear'n'Clean from MSI is a long life algaecide devised to reduce pool maintenance and control green, black and mustard algae. A single dose will, keep the water crystal clear from algae for periods up to six months. Without the presence of algae, chlorine consumption can be reduced by up to 30% and in one action solve many of the inherent problems which so concern swimming pool owners.

SCP’s Acti range of chemicals offers the choice of a copper free or copper based long-life winteriser that comes in 5ltr containers. SCP also supply the popular Fi-Clor range.

PROTECTIVE COVER-UP

Covering the pool is vital whether this is by simply shutting up an

automated cover, making sure it is manufactured to withstand winter

temperatures, or a debris cover that is fitted around the perimeter of the pool by using a strap and anchor system. Winter covers are also available through a number

of UK manufacturers for cost effective coverage of above-ground pools.

Aquatrac have been manufacturing fully automatic, energy efficient and totally secure safety covers for many years so providing complete peace of mind for pool owners throughout the autumn and winter months. Made from specially formulated, durable polypropylene, Aquaflex winter debris covers are available in green/black or blue/black mesh fabric. This tight mesh allows rainwater to pass through but keeps the pool water crystal clear. There are two types of debris cover available from Aquaflex; The Emperor and The Sovereign, both of which are supplied with a storage bag and a three year pro rata guarantee. Covers can be manufactured to accommodate ladders etc intruding into the pool as well as step sections outside the pool. All shapes and sizes can be supplied, with standard sizes generally available from stock. The covers are made 1'0" (0.30m) larger than the pool all round (i.e. add 2'0" (0.60m) to the width and length of the pool to calculate the cover size. Certikin’s Walu cover provides three covers for the price of one: installing a Walu means you can dispense with a solar bubble cover and its reel

THREE OPTIONS TO DEAL WITH THE ONSET OF WINTER

1 Work through the tried and tested shutdown plan which includes everything from chemicals shock dosing the pool, closing vales and isolating power supply. Easy, straightforward but just takes some time.

2 A pool cover can be added to prevent a build-up of dirt and debris, as well as making the area safer for children. There’s some great products on the market from a number of specialist companies which are effective, easy to fit and operate all year round with energy benefits.

3 Deal with the problem by finding a more permanent solution, by installing a pool enclosure also improves safety and security, and can be used to extend the swimming season far beyond the brief months of the UK summer.
