A unique method to renovate and upgrade swimming pools has proven itself to be one of the biggest hits of the summer.

The Proteus pool panel system is a descendent of the Myrtha pool system introduced 50 years ago in Northern Italy and specified extensively for International FINA championship pools and the London 2012 Olympics.

Proteus UK swimming pools say they are inundated with enquiries from UK holiday parks to renovate and upgrade existing swimming pools. The technology is developed for swimming pool renovation and refurbishment of residential and commercial pools. It offers more technical solutions and degrees of finish than other methods. The exclusive feature is it provides an opportunity to convert any existing pool from scum channel or skimmer configuration to overflow gutter technology without major

Olympic gold medalist Alistair Brownlee has claimed he would never have become a London 2012 triathlon hero if it wasn’t for the swimming pool in his garden. Swimming in the counter-current pool in the garden of his home in Horsforth in Yorkshire was key to his recovery from injury in the build up to the August Olympics.

“The pool had a counter-current, a jet in it so you can swim or run against the current. I spent three weeks in a cast and another week when I couldn’t ride a bike. So it was a month without cycling. The pool made a huge difference.”

Yet the triathlete’s home built swimming pool and underwater treadmill was nearly closed down

after a neighbour complained. Earlier this year a ‘man from the council’ nearly achieved what the world’s fittest athletes have struggled to do – knock the Briton’s gold medalist off course.

After tearing a tendon in January, Brownlee installed the swimming pool to help him continue training. Given the pool was facing the main road, he soon became something of a local curiosity. But one neighbour was unhappy with the size of it and contacted the council to complain.

Brownlee, the reigning world champion as well as Olympic gold medalist said: “When I tore my Achilles I thought ‘this is the Olympics coming up, I’m going to

disturbance to the existing pool structure. There are many options that can be considered to suit the budget available. There is an opportunity to install a commercial liner into the existing skimmer pool but with the advantage of fixing a ceramic tile at water level to improve appearance and be resilient to UV degradation from sunlight. It is particularly suitable for pool extensions where operators need to increase surface area to accommodate higher bather loads. The old pool shell can be reconfigured to any shape or size required without the potential problems associated with extending reinforced concrete structures. It is quick to install and requires minimum interventions on the existing pool structure. The wall panel system comprises stainless steel panels and is well proven on extremely prestigious swimming pool facilities.

have to do something special to get myself in shape as quickly as I can’. “I was doing aqua jogging in a public pool in public sessions with kids jumping on my head and old grannies telling me I shouldn’t be there. I was thinking – this is ridiculous, I’m going to the Olympics in six months!

“So I decided to get a pool of my own and put it in the garden.” It took Brownlee’s triathlon friends and team-mates a week to dig a hole big enough to fit the pool and, having spent three weeks with his foot in a cast, Brownlee was keen to build up his fitness.

“The neighbours’ all claimed to be all right with it but someone put a complaint in and one day some little

man from the council came round and asked if I had planning permission,” said Brownlee. “Luckily at that point, Malcolm Brown, the Olympic Performance Manager for British Triathlon, arrived and persuaded the official not to take things further. We managed to persuade him the measurements he had taken were just slightly out. Consequently it didn’t require planning permission,” Brownlee added.

process of bonding PVC to the Proteus stainless steel panels. A hard PVC membrane is hot laminated to the steel panels and PVC welding is employed to combine all the elements together to provide a homogenous swimming pool tank with an Alkor reinforced membrane for the floor to follow contours of the concrete sub-surface. The PVC welding procedures, combined with the flexibility of the wall to floor detail makes it extremely suitable where unstable ground conditions are experienced.

The deck channel can be finished with a ceramic deck tile or with mosaic tiles to give the appearance of a tiled pool.
