JAMES PLEAS FOR SUNSHINE
Evolution Pools from Devon launched a Facebook Like or Share competition to give something back to our loyal customers for supporting them during the poor weather spell this summer. The winner of £200’s worth of pool supplies was existing customer James Bowes who was one of the most enthusiastic entrants to the competition and was selected at random by a customer in store at Evolution’s hot tub
showroom in Lapford. James was notified as the winner and was ecstatic: “I never win anything, all we need now is some sunshine.” James Bowes then returned a Facebook image of him sitting in his pool.
NEW THREAT FROM HSE COSTS
Businesses caught flouting health and safety legislation could face significant bills from October. This follows an announcement from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) that a cost recovery scheme, known as Fee for Intervention (FFI), will start on 1 October. The scheme will recover costs from those breaking health and safety laws.
The new scheme is a major shake-up of how the HSE operates. It will mean that any businesses found to be in material breach of health and safety laws, which means it’s considered serious enough to issue written notification, will have to cover the HSE’s costs incurred in investigating and enforcing the legislation. These costs currently come out of the public purse.

CERTIKIN OFFER IPAD WITH CALOREX HEAT PUMP
Certikin is offering a free iPad for anyone buying a Calorex PPT22 ‘X’ single phase heat pump.
Designed for the UK climate, so suitable for early to late season operation, the electronically controlled defrost allows units to operate reliably in air temps as low as 5°C.
The Calorex PPT22 features scroll compressors and utilises latest technology touch screen control. The control enables easy
adjustment of the pool water set point temperature and clear symbols show the actual swimming pool water temperature and operational status of the unit. ‘Smart pool pump control’ enables the pump to run only when the pool requires heating, significantly cutting down on pool pump running time. A small footprint provides more installation opportunities around the sides of buildings or in plant rooms.
The heat pump comes with a three year parts and labour warranty and five year guarantee against corrosion of the titanium heat exchanger. The offer runs to 31 October or whilst stocks last. The offer is available from Certikin, Golden Coast and SCP.

TWO DAY POOL HEALTH AND HYGIENE CONFERENCE IN LONDON
A two day conference supported by the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group is being held on 19th and 20th of November by the Royal Society for Public Health. The conference, ‘Health and Hygiene in Pools’, promises to provide a useful educational update for those who design, build, manage and operate pools and pool equipment in leisure complexes, hotels or schools. It will also be ideal for risk assessors, water treatment specialists and those working in environmental health, health and
safety and health protection. The keynote speaker, Dr Michael Beach, from the USA Centres for Disease Control, will provide an update on recreational water related illness. Dr Gordon Nichols, from the HPA, will speak on the microbial hazards associated with swimming and Dr Rachel Chalmers, who is the Head of the National Reference Unit for Cryptosporidia, will update on outbreaks associated with swimming pools, both at home and abroad. The first day will examine how to design and manage pools and hot tubs and will finish with an overview of the legal implications when someone becomes ill from using a pool. The second day will discuss how
to keep pool water safe by managing the pool water chemistry and the essential elements of appropriate training. The conference will also look at topical issues, such as the impact of air quality on asthma and the benefits and problems associated with the use of green technology in swimming pools and the leisure environment. There will also be an update from the HSE on the rewrite of HSG 179.
