English, Maths and ESOL
ESOL (entry level 1 to level 2) We offer a range of part-time ESOL courses from entry level 1 (beginners) to level 2 (advanced). The courses are for adults who speak English as an additional language. All courses develop English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in a range of contexts, including employment and citizenship. You will be entered for the Skills for Life exam at the appropriate level. You will also have the opportunity to prepare for and take a Functional Maths examination. Entry requirements: College interview and initial assessment. Possible next steps: After completing the course, you can progress to higher level ESOL courses, vocational or academic courses or to employment. Length of course (weeks): 36 (evening and day options)
ESOL Literacy (entry level 1 to entry
level 3) These courses are for adults who speak English as an additional language and have English literacy skills at a beginner level or who are not yet confi dent with reading and writing. All your skills will be developed (speaking, listening, reading and writing), but there is more focus on basic reading and writing. You will take a Skills for Life exam when you are ready. Entry requirements: College interview and assessment. Possible next steps: Higher level vocational or ESOL/ literacy courses at the College. Length of course (weeks): 36 (day options)
ESOL Maths (entry level 1 to level 2) You will improve your skills in maths covering subjects such as measurement, calculation of numbers, money and time and interpretation of data, as an additional component of your ESOL course. You will increase your confi dence and be prepared to meet the maths requirements of other College courses. Entry requirements: College assessment. Possible next steps: Higher level vocational or ESOL/ maths courses at the College. Length of course (weeks): 36 (day options)
ESOL Progression Pathways: Care, Classroom Assistants, Catering or
Motor Vehicle These courses offer a route for ESOL students wishing to work in vocational areas. You will improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while developing vocational knowledge, understanding and experience. You will take Skills for Life qualifi cations at the end of the course.
Care and Classroom Assistants’ course offer work placement in a childcare or classroom assistant setting. You will also study maths and English. Please note you will need to have a CRB check for this. (See page 13). Entry requirements: Entry 3/Level 1 Speaking and Listening, Entry 3 Writing. Possible next steps: Vocational courses within the College. Length of course (weeks): 34 Hours per week: 9
Catering and Motor Vehicle courses have specialist vocational training in our excellent workshops. You will take an ESOL Skills for Life exam and have the option of also taking a maths qualifi cation at your level. Entry requirements: Entry 3/Level 1 Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. Possible next steps: Vocational courses within the College. Length of course (weeks): 34 Hours per week: 9
English for Academic Purposes
(with IELTS) This course is for students who want to study or train in an English-speaking university or institutions of Higher and Further Education. You will improve your Academic English – speaking, listening, reading and writing, and take an ESOL Skills for Life qualifi cation set in an academic context. In addition, you will develop skills and specifi c exam techniques to enable you to take the IELTS test at a London Centre at the end of the course. Entry requirements: Level 1/2, First Certifi cate or Advanced (or equivalent). Possible next steps: Higher Education or professional qualifi cation in the UK. Length of course (weeks): 30 (evenings) Hours per week: 5
