Our students achieve. You can too! HCC’s Hospitality and Catering student Tony Smart was offered an exclusive place on the work experience programme at prestigious hotel, The Savoy. Tony, who studied Professional Cookery at the London City Hospitality Centre (LCHC), HCC’s hospitality and catering training


centre, was selected from a large number of applicants to work in the kitchens of the world renowned hotel.


The trainee chef, aged 39, from Walthamstow, supported other chefs in preparing a range of dishes as part of the two week placement. He said: “I will defi nitely make the most of this fantastic opportunity. It is one of the top places to work as a chef and I am proud to have been selected.”


HCC’s Carpentry and Joinery student Adam Connolly proved to be one of the best at his trade after winning top honours in the regional heat of SkillBuild 2011, the UK’s biggest skills competition. The Level 2 student, from Stoke Newington, competed against other trainees from across the


capital to win fi rst place in the Joinery category. He went on to represent London at the national fi nals in Leeds. Adam said: “It felt like an achievement in itself to be put forward to take part in the contest. I did my best to refl ect the high standard of teaching I have experienced in Carpentry and Joinery at Hackney Community College.”


HCC’s Business student Stacey Hemmings secured a job at the Learning Trust, after impressing them while on her apprenticeship. The Level 2 student, from Barking, worked at the Learning Trust as an apprentice for a year while studying on the Business Administration course at College


one day a week. The 22 year old’s positive attitude and hard work saw her rewarded with a new contract working in their Admissions department. She said: “I’ve always wanted to work in an offi ce. I really love doing a 9 – 5 job. You get to earn a decent salary and you learn a lot as well.”

HCC’s Tiling student Valerie Antoine saw her outstanding work become a fi xture in London’s City Hall after winning an Olympic inspired construction skills competition. Level 2 student Valerie won a gold medal at the Olympic Skills Showcase, with her creative interpretation of


a swimmer diving into a pool. The tiling mosaic was unveiled during an offi cial presentation and now hangs in Hackney’s London Assembly Member, Jennette Arnold’s offi ce. She said: “I’ve never achieved anything like this before and so I’m very happy that my work has been acknowledged”.


HCC’s Sports student Paul Oyedokun is using the knowledge and skills gained on the HND Sports course at Hackney Community College to help with his coaching at Arsenal Football Club. The 20 year old, from Hackney, teaches children to play football for the Premier League


club’s community engagement programme, while he is studying for his qualifi cations. He said: “The HND Sports course is a good opportunity to add to the coaching qualifi cations and experience I already have. Plus it is at university level so it sets me up for even better career prospects in the future. I’m really enjoying it.”
