IT Tour of Utilize Plc 9th & 10th September 2011 O

ver two days on the 9th.and

10th. September members of our club and a few guests were invited to visit the offices of Utilize Plc. situated in North Street, Hornchurch. After being escorted to the office suite by a big bloke with an Aussie twang, we were met by Company Director Warren Davies and one of his team. Once seated in the board room we were given a brief overview of the beginnings of the company and how it has developed into today's multi million pound operation. Warren actually started the business from his bedroom and proceeded to move into different premises as it developed. At the time of the visit Warren was employing about seventy staff in the Hornchurch Office and another smaller staff of about twenty in another office in South London. We were split into two groups and while one group toured the main office area where the work was being done, the rest of us were given an illustrated talk about how the company operated and what it was that they did. This in itself was interesting and impressive but it was only when you actually saw the team doing their work that you really

understood just what a 'mind blowing' outfit this was. The youngsters on the floor were busy talking on phones , some wandering about as they did so, looking at multi purpose computer screens or busy typing and tapping on their key- boards. Everybody was very busy but what was very interesting, was that they all looked very happy and seemed to be

enjoying their work.

T

o explain the details of this operation fully would be rather difficult and would

not do it justice, so I will only make a short comment. Utilize looks after the computer systems of a large number of companies that would not be able to employ enough people with the knowledge and expertise needed to look after their systems. So they employ Utilize to do this remotely. In a nutshell Utilize knows when there is a problem with a company's computers before the company does, and they are able to put it right from the office there in. There is a fleet of cars on the road to deliver and fix hardware and these are tracked wherever they go, which enables the head office to direct the nearest vehicle to the Customers workplace in the quickest possible time.
