A
nyway, one of the
cathedral guides, a dear lady of ad- vancing years who was sup- posed to keep us moving and quiet while the archbishop conducted his meeting in the main body of the cathedral, got talking to some of our members. She began to explain the stories in some of the win- dows and as she warmed to her task so the crowd of Rotarians grew and the excited murmur- ings of apprecia- tion encouraged her to seek more and more windows to talk about. As a result we found ourselves in an out -of-bounds area, and we were quickly ushered out by a rather of- ficious member of staff who gave our lovely guide a bit of a ticking off. By then it was too late we had been royally entertained and although she was offered a little something as a thank you she politely declined and suggested we put a donation into the ‘box’.
U
pon the conclusion of the tour we boarded the coach and drove down to
Broadstairs where we had lunch after a brief walk around the town. We then boarded the coach again and enjoyed a short tour with a commentary by our wonderful driver as we made our way to the English Heritage site of Walmer Castle. This too proved to be an inspired choice by organisers, and much
knowledge was gained as we toured the grounds and the castle.
U
pon the conclusion of
this trip we boarded the coach once again for the journey back to the hotel where we readied ourselves for the ‘formal’ dinner that evening. This was
another excellent and enjoyable event, with much banter and laughter. The food was good and the wine flowed. I gave my speech in German and President Gudrun responded in English and presented us with a box of wine from the region where they live in
Germany. (We drank this at one of our meetings at West Lodge, a fact that I forgot to mention in my account of that meeting)
The excellent meals was followed by more fellowship in the bar and as our two parties were
the majority of the guests at the hotel that weekend, not many of us had an early night.
A A
ll too soon we were gathered once again in the
dining room for our breakfast. Here we said our fond farewells to our guests, and gradually
during the morning w all left to make our way home.
ll agreed that we had once again spent a most enjoyable couple of days in the
company of our German friends. We parted with words “See you next year” when I believe (subject to confirmation) we will be meeting up again on German soil in city of Cologne.
