Project Focus: Parkview
Park View staff member Mike O’Callaghan-Williams took part in ‘Mzansi Cymru’ a music project organised by Valleys Kids. An Evening of Music
We left Park View at 3.45pm to travel to the Millennium Centre, Cardiff where the event was taking place. After we arrived we had some time to spare so we had a look around Cardiff Bay while the performers set up and carried out a sound check.
‘Mzansi Cymru’ is a performance based on a play written by Pontypridd author Laurence Allen, with music written by Paula Gardiner, head of jazz at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. The performers are a community choir, local musicians and music students.
The story is of a Welsh male actor who falls in love with an African girl during the making of the film Zulu. It started with music then the singers joined in for about an hour. The placement of the stage emphasized the acoustics making the sound fill the whole building.
Digital Photography Course
Geraint tells us about his experience at the Blackwood Education Centre.
At the §end of August 2010 at a support session my key worker Tony and I had a discussion about enrolling me on a college course to further my experience and qualifications. It was something that I had always thought about but never followed up due to lack of confidence
and encouragement.
This time I decided to jump in feet first and take up the challenge. In September 2010 I was referred to the Blackwood Education Centre where I enrolled on the digital photography course.

A Welsh man and an African woman narrated between the music and the deep meaning of the story put a lump in my throat.
We didn’t all think we would enjoy it but were pleasantly surprised - the performance was brilliant. The combination of the choir and the instrumentals complemented each other. It was a very good experience and we would recommend it to anyone.
