"Pre-hysterical" Day at Cardiff Museum Project Focus: Caersalem House
It’s 10 million years BC and a faithful band of seven intrepid adventurers set off in the hope of finding what every person needs - food fire and shelter. We struggled through tough terrain and adverse weather conditions to track down beasts to vanquish and appease our hunger...
Actually two staff and five tenants from Caersalem House and Elias Court, caught a train to Cathays to visit the Cardiff Museum.
After a lunch of curry and chips we had a very interesting tour of the impressionists paintings that had been donated to the Gallery. The tour guide also showed us statues and sketches, detailing their history and the distinctive ways they were created.
Mike Horrell (Cro-Magnon man) Chris, Shane and Andrew and I filled in a questionnaire and were rewarded with free coffee and biscuits in the café.
We entered the History of Life area, which explained the origins of our
species from the 'Big Bang' right through to the dawn of early man. This started a theological discussion between Andrew and I about creationism against evolution.
The geology of volcanoes and the creation of the continents through plate tectonics was clearly explained and we learnt about interesting rock formations like gold, moon rocks, crystals and amber.
The animal models were very life-like, from the full size woolly mammoth to the bison and dinosaurs. Of course, we weren't allowed to touch any of these as it would have meant a mountain of risk assessment paperwork - playing with man eating, extinct animals is too dangerous!
We took lots of photographs and have many memories of a fun and interesting day and would encourage any project to attend, especially as it’s free entry.
