started my job with mooandbaa last May that I’d be editing the Holstein UK Journal, I’d have simply said “in my dreams”, but here I am writing my first editor’s notes.

Well if someone had told me when I

Holstein UK AGM

18 October

Three Counties Showground, Malvern 6.00pm

And I’m writing in an era of massive change for Holstein UK. With new staff joining the team and the launch of some new products and brand messages, there are certainly some exciting times round the corner and I’m looking forward to sharing them with you in The Journal.

There has certainly been plenty going on since the last issue with the Royal Welsh Show, the inaugural UK Dairy Day, bull proofs and the HYB Weekend Rally.

The theme for this issue is diversification and my travels across the UK have enhanced the fact that many business minded Holstein breeders are looking at ways of adding value to their herds and farm businesses, all centred on their passion for pedigree breeding.

The farm features in this issue are all thought provoking examples of diversification and for those of you thinking of expanding your businesses, we have a specialist piece on how to get diversification right. Alongside this, the Journal also contains a mix of technical content focussing on health and nutrition, as well as some essential business related content including pieces on carbon footprints and CAP reform. Along with a fantastic Royal Welsh Show, which saw an abundance of quality, particularly in the senior cow class, I’ve also had the pleasure of attending the HYB rally in Devon - a credit to all involved in making that weekend a huge success.

But the highlight of the year so far has to be UK Dairy Day. Huge congratulations must go to the Holstein UK team and, together we’re already working on plans to make next year’s event even bigger and better, so watch this space.

I can honestly say I’ve thoroughly enjoyed pulling my first Journal together alongside the teams at Holstein UK, CIS and CDI and I hope you enjoy reading it. I look forward to meeting as many breeders as possible on my travels.

On Friday 5th September and Wednesday 17th

September, along with the successful launch of

UK Dairy Day, we held Long Service Awards ceremonies for Holstein UK, CIS and CDI team members, where the above were each awarded with an engraved glass paper weight and vouchers
