Ahead of the much anticipated All Breeds All Britain Calf Show, The Journal finds out what the showmanship, Holstein and British Friesian judges will be looking for.


The move from Stoneleigh to the Three Counties Showground secures the future of the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show with the Three Counties Agricultural Society very excited to welcome the event. The venue offers excellent facilities in the Wye and Avon Halls with the benefit of a water supply and ample room for camping and caravanning around the site. Members and calves from all over the UK will gather to compete for the highly regarded All Britain title in what is one of the highlights of the HYB calendar. Standards will be extremely high as always with the best from each club qualifying for the final in both showmanship and calf classes. Taking the difficult task of judging are Showmanship judge Jessica Hassall, livestock photographer and freelance marketing consultant; Holstein judge David Booth, Feizor Holsteins, from Lancashire and Sarah Liddle from The Farm Organisation and contract farmer with Carkin Holsteins will be judging British Friesians. Meet the judges and find out some tips on what they are looking for.

Can you tell us a little bit about your judging experience? Over the past few years I have been fortunate to have judged many great shows including several HYB qualifiers, but the two shows that stand out for me are the Great Yorkshire Show and Royal Bath and West. I was also honoured to judge the showmanship at the South East Weekend Rally in 2011.


What are your proudest showmanship achievements?


Without any question winning the National Showmanship in 2003 leading


my favourite animal of all time Primo Jed Celeste has to be my proudest showmanship moment. The only moment that ever came close was repeating this achievement in 2004 with the legend that was Smiddiehill Stefan Reward – two adrenaline fuelled moments I will never forget!


What other achievements have you had in the show ring? In the past 15 years I have been very lucky to have shown around the world, leading animals in Canada, USA and Australia to name a few. I have been
