with the Stormatic having an Excellent classified Shottle daughter in her third lactation, a milking Talent heifer and a bulling heifer by Shottle. Paul aims to breed a balanced, uniform herd cows with open ribbed frames combining dairy strength and also carrying super udders. Due to a change in the calving age, with heifers now calved at two years old, the herd is youthful, with a lot of heifers calved over the last two years. A few surplus heifers are sold fresh calved through Leek and Market Drayton. Paul explains: “I am really pleased with how the heifers are performing after calving at two years old. They are big enough and I’m looking forward to watching them mature.


“I have learned not to buy everything sales reps try to sell me or jump at the latest bull and although I want to move with the times, the herd is more even with many daughters of fewer bulls than one or two of many sires,” adds Paul.


A bull that has noticeably worked well in the herd is the noted Picston Shottle. “We have always had Shottle in the tank, however, we did only purchase semen when it was less than £30.” The oldest milking daughter is due shortly with her seventh calf and although there is a lot of Shottle blood in the herd, Paul will still use a straw where he can. Other female additions in the herd include the purchase in 2010 of Coxongreen Shottle Zindra, who was purchased privately as a calf. She has matured well and is now scored Excellent in her third lactation. She was also
