“Having this crucial information available at the touch of a button will enable breeders to select cows for breeding much more easily and simply and also mark out those cows and heifers which should be culled from the herd in a more systematic manner,” explains executive director CIS, Sue Cope.

“This key information will also allow breeders to be better informed when consulting their breeding advisers and ensure they make the most appropriate breeding decisions for their herds and their systems.”

Key information such as calving interval, average somatic cell count and average PLI are all shown in the family report to give breeders the most relevant information in one easy to use format. “The aim across the range of new products has been to provide farmers with in-depth information in the simplest possible format to ensure maximum benefi t for them,” she explained.

Carmarthenshire-based Eifi on, Mary, Wyn and Rhys Jones of the Feithy herd are the winners of the 2014 Holstein UK Premier Herd competition having fought off stiff competition from across the UK. The winning herd was announced at this year’s inaugural UK Dairy Day at Telford International Centre. The Jones family’s 190-cow herd, based at Kidwelly, was singled out for praise by judges Bill Nadin and Yasmin Bradbury of the Sterndale and Peak herds, for its strong commercial focus and commitment to breeding functional cows.

With the herd running at an average yield of 10,600kg/cow at 4.54% fat and 3.25% protein, the Jones family run an all-year round calving system, with a grass based diet and a TMR fed all year round. Focusing on breeding functional, structurally correct cows the Jones’ have bred a herd of deep quality, with 72 classifi ed Excellent, a further 95 Very Good and 20 GP two year olds. The Feithy herd’s success comes off the back of a successful 12 months for the herd, with Feithy ER Ruth 17 picking up the supreme championship at the Welsh Dairy Show last autumn, as well as being named Reserve All Britain Mature Cow last year. The herd also picked up its fi fth All Wales Premier Herd title and was named a Master Breeder herd in 2013, with leading cow families including the Lilac, Lavender, Lilian, Margaret, Tilly and Portis lines. Picking up the reserve championship honours was Andrew Birkle’s Winchat herd, with Richard Bown’s Richaven herd the Honourable Mention.
