NORTHERN IRELAND The winner of this year’s Northern Ireland Annual Herds Inspection Competition was Nicholas and Jim McCann’s Simlahill herd from Bangor.

Milked twice daily the herd averages 10,600kgs at 3.92% bf and 3.24% p. The 180-cow herd recently received a Master Breeder accolade with current classifi cations including 68 Ex and 80 VG animals, with the remainder of the herd Good Plus. Speaking at the presentation of awards, Welsh judge Michael George described the Simlahill herd as incredible. “This herd oozes quality and consistency throughout. The cows are all of a similar type, with large frames, dairy character and super udders.” “Every herd I visited had a lot to offer and I’ve seen some great individual cows and heifers. The competition was close in all of the categories.” The Ulster Bank-sponsored herds inspection competition continues to attract an unprecedented number of entrants annually and this year separate judges were appointed for each category of the competition – junior, senior and premier herds.

Judging the junior section was Jim Morrison from the Inch herd, Downpatrick. He commented: “I was impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the younger breeders and this bodes well for the future of the Holstein breed in Northern Ireland.” Offi ciating in the senior section was Brian Mawhinney from the Laurelhill herd, Doagh, Ballyclare. He said: “I was particularly impressed with the Dillon herd, winner of the large herd category. This is a massive herd, consistent throughout, and a credit to brothers Noel and Trevor Muldrew.“ Concluding club chairman Gaston Wallace thanked the judges and also Ulster Bank for its continued fi nancial support. Finally to Austin, David and Beatrice Perry for hosting the farm walk and awards presentation evening for 200 guests at their Killane herd, Ahoghill.
