CLUBS ONLINE NORTHERN IRELAND CONTINUED

A fantastic event with keen and enthusiastic kids was how Scottish judge Colin Laird described the Northern Ireland HYB Club Calf Show. He awarded the overall championship to Ards Atwood Ashlyn from the Patton family, Newtownards. By Atwood, she is out of the Ex92 scored Lomond Damion Ashlyn. “The champion is well balanced, very dairy like and has great legs and feet,” said Colin. Top honours in the showmanship section went to the junior class winner Desmond McCorry from Aghalee. Colin Laird added:”I couldn’t find fault with his handling skills. Desmond knew exactly what he was doing and flowed well with his calf.”

STAFFORDSHIRE

Our Summer Herds Competition took place over the 17th 11 entrants, including two new competitors

and 19th June, with Alan Smith from Bumblebee Holsteins judging

Many thanks to John Lomax, Mary Marshall and Pat Hill for providing refreshments and to Pat and John Lomax for stewarding on the first day, with Chris Howe and Janet Law sharing the driving of the judge around on the second day. The presentation evening was held on 14th

Alan then presented cups and certificates accordingly with the overall champion herd going to the Marshall family’s Overseal herd, with the runner up being the Hydaways herd owned by the Hill family. The Club enjoyed a visit to Andy Birkle’s Whinchat herd on August 1st

July at the Coach and Horses, Abbotts Bromley, with 30 members enjoying a

first class meal. It was lovely to have Alan Smith join us and we enjoyed his entertaining résumé of the two days judging, during which he mentioned every herd that he had visited. Alan was complimentary regarding the cattle he had seen and said that Staffordshire should be proud of its herds.

and after being concerned about a possible lack of

numbers following good weather and harvesting being done the heavens opened and 30 members enjoyed a day off. We were welcomed by Mimi, and while enjoying coffee the rain stopped and we were able to go out to the field and see the impressive herd that Andy has built up over many years. We were lucky to have an hour and a half looking round the herd and the influence of Shottle was evident. Some members were interested in the bedding in the cubicles which had a good influence on the general wellbeing of the cows. The evening finished off with a much appreciated barbecue. Many thanks to Andy and family for a really good, enjoyable evening. Vote of thanks was given by Steve Hill.
