Second calver leads Colman Dispersal at 3000gns
The dispersal of the Colman herd for the Bunby family, Boncath, North Pembrokeshire, saw a large crowd gather to support the sale and trade peak at 3000gns.
Making the top price was the homebred second calver Colman Icefyre Dora 2. Classifi ed VG85 as a heifer and giving 11,125kg in her fi rst lactation she calved in February and sold giving 53.3kg. Sired by Braedale Icefyre she is out of a dam by Lucky Mike that gave 13,070kgs. She sold to Messrs Evans, Mathry, Pembrokeshire, for 3000gns.
The same buyer also paid 2650gns for Colman Lucis Mildred. This VG86 scored savage Leigh Lucius daughter calved her second on 1 March and sold giving 46.4kgs a day having produced 9848kgs as a heifer. Young stock sold up to 2050gns for Colman Toyota Dora, an in-calf heifer due in November to Woodmarsh Metallic. Sired by Altatoyota this heifer is out of the top price Colman Icefyre Dora 2 and sold to Messrs Davies, Narberth, Pembrokeshire. Just behind that at 2000gns was Colman Loffi ciel Emily selling to Messrs Reed, Spittal, Haverfordwest. Due in September she is by Comestar Loffi ciel and out of a dam by Mr Minister. Averages: 22 calved cows and heifers £1625.59, 10 aged and three quartered cows £589.05, 13 served heifers £1476.46, eight maiden heifers £876.75, four heifer calves £669.38 (Gwilym Richards and Co and J J Morris).
Golden Opportunities
Although numbers of milkers were down at the collective Golden Opporunities Sale at Sedgemoor in July, quality lots were still in demand. Top price was 2200gns for Penrikka Sicy Marina 2 from R J Goss and Sons. This fresh calved heifer by Sicy Knowledge is out of a Double Trouble Forbidden sired dam. Making 2050gns was Kevin Rickard and Martin Webber’s Withy Armstead Rachel, a two year old heifer by Armstead and out of
Brandhall Zevs Rachel. The Sandpark herd from RJ Willcox averaged an impressive £2074 for four calved heifers by Leif, Shottle and Justice. Top price cow at 2000gns was the third calved Slimbridge Design Kiki 2 from Slimbridge Holsteins. This Ex90 classifi ed Design daughter is out of the Ex92 scored Slimbridge Elegant Kiki, an Arnell Elegant daughter that produced a life time yield of 100t and is backed by another Excellent dam. In-calf heifers hit a high of 1710gns for Sampfordel Reece Rijpma from Messrs L W R and K A Hill who are ceasing milk production. By Askew Reece her dam is the Lucky Mike daughter Chardit Rijpma 94 that produced 12,098kg at 2.78%bf and 3.04%p in her second lactation. This heifer is due to calve in August to Sandy-Valley Club. Bulling heifers sold up to 1020gns, while yearling heifers bettered that at 1080gns. The top price yearling heifer was Sidedowns Twist Butterfl y from R and J Bowles. This July 2013-born Cogent Twist daughter is out of three generations of VG classifi ed dams. Averages: calved cows £1830.93, calved heifers £1909.03, in-calf heifers £1650, bulling and maiden heifers £1039.50, one bull £1500 (Greenslade Taylor Hunt).
Grinkle Dispersal
The dispersal of Richard and Heather Thompson’s Grinkle herd attracted both local and far travelled buyers with cattle heading from the farm near Whitby to Ayrshire, Cambridgeshire, Shropshire, South Wales and Leicestershire. Star of the show was Grinkle Shottle Trixie 2, a VG86 classifi ed young cow by Shottle and backed by four generations of excellent dams. She gave more than 8000kg as a heifer and was due to calf again in September to Crackholm Fever. After spirited bidding between Welsh and Irish interests, it was Yorkshire breeder Peter Waring who secured her at 4800gs for his Winton herd at Cherry Burton, Beverley.
Another highlight of the sale was the super group of freshly calved heifers, which produced many of the sale’s higher prices. At 3300gs was Grinkle Jotan Kite Red, a red daughter of Jotan from three straight excellent dams, her dam being the Ex93 scored Allian WR Kite Red. She joins the Ellaclose herd of T W Atkinson and son. Peter Waring was in again at 2600gs to purchase another Shottle daughter, this time Grinkle Shottle Periwinkle 3. Calved in May she is out of a VG86 classifi ed dam by Jackson, one of six VG or Ex scored dams.
Making 25500gns was Grinkle Taurus Spottie. A daughter of the homebred Goldwyn son Grinkle Taurus she is out of the VG87 classifi ed Eskvalley Spottie 54. She sold to E J Fort for their Silmoor herd.
At the same money was the Shottle sired heifer Grinkle Shottle Jewel who joins W Stockdale and Sons’ Carrvale herd. She is carries three generations of dams classifi ed in the top grades with her dam the Ex90 Heather Holme Velvet daughter Grinkle Velvet Jewel. Youngstock sold well with heifer calves at foot
