Be an Environmental Leader

MATERIAL TOPICS IN 2013:

Responsible Financing Eco-Efficiency Changing Climate

green.ing of the economy

The relationship between the environment and the economy has been the subject of debate for more than 20 years. It’s often assumed that protecting the environment comes at the cost of economic growth. Our research examines the opportunities that arise from considering the environment as an enabler of economic growth. We call this the greening of the economy.

“Labelling some sectors of the economy as ‘green’ and others as ‘brown’ can diminish the real progress that industry, government and citizens have made,” says TD’s Chief Economist, Craig Alexander. “We view the greening of the economy as a progressive process that is occurring throughout the economy. ”

In 2013, TD hired an environmental economist to explore the relationship between the economy and the environment. TD Economics published three reports demonstrating thought leadership on these topics and a desire to accelerate the dialogue on key civic and economic issues:

Greening of the Canadian Economy: Develops a working definition of the greening of the economy and a framework for measuring progress.

Greening of New York City: Applies the greening of the economy framework to show how progressive municipal policy can stimulate economic growth, while improving the environment and human health and well-being.

Green Bonds: A New Era of Environ- mental Finance: Examines innovations in financial capital markets to support efforts aimed at greening the economy.
