Design focus: AWAY Spa, W Singapore

Were there any design challenges to overcome? “By the time we won the contract, the pools had been constructed with no penetrations for pipework and we were not allocated any space for the treatment plants. The lower levels beneath the pools had been earmarked for parking and our installation then became far more complex.

“Many designers forget that pools and thermal equipment also require technical plant which has to be located adjacent to them and with sufficient access for operation and maintenance. “We had to come up with a solution and we decided to split the plant into three separate areas in order to install each feature treatment.”

What are you most proud of in the spa’s design? “We are very proud of the overall wet experience. It has many functional, high quality elements and absolutely no gimmicks. Many spas contain features which could be regarded as little more than a novelty, adding no value to the spa experience.”

Why are wet spa areas worth the investment? “Thermal and hydro experiences provide an extension to the spa experience and add to guests’ enjoyment. Many day spas offer a full range of massage therapies but do not go as far as providing wet facilities which could attract guests.

“The experiences we have installed at AWAY Spa add to the overall spa journey and give guests the option to enjoy a treatment and leave, or to stay and spend the day relaxing in the thermal experiences and hydro pools.”

What trends do you see emerging? “Barr + Wray is still receiving many enquiries for hammam rooms to be provided within spa resorts. We have recently finished large hammam installations in Abu Dhabi, Baku and Singapore which are visually different but all operate on similar principles. “Vitality pools also continue to be central to most developments and designers are always pushing our company to develop new attractions for their guests.”
