Rockville, MD — Cyber security is on top of the list of pressing needs for a new partnership formed of govern- ment agencies and private corpora- tions. In recognition of the critical need to protect private-sector intel- lectual property and other valuable business data from a growing num- ber of cyber threats, 11 major compa- nies have formally established part- nerships with the National Cyberse- curity Center of Excellence (NCCoE). Principal parties to this new
partnership include U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski, U.S. Cyber Com- mand Commander/National Security Agency (NSA) Director General Kei- th B. Alexander, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, Montgomery Coun- ty Chief Executive Isiah Leggett and Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and NIST Director Patrick Gallagher joined the new partners for a signing ceremony at the NCCoE’s facilities in Rock - ville, Maryland. The center, a public-private
partnership hosted by the U.S. Com- merce Department’s National Insti- tute of Standards and Technology (NIST), works with industry, aca- demic and government experts to find practical solutions for business- es’ most pressing cybersecurity needs. The NCCoE was formed through a Memorandum of Under- standing among the State of Mary- land, Montgomery County and NIST.
Partner Companies At the ceremony, representatives
from the new partner companies — Cisco Systems Inc., Hewlett-Packard, HyTrust Inc., Intel Corp., McAfee Inc., Microsoft Federal Civilian Services, RSA, Splunk Inc., Symantec Corp., Vanguard Integrity Professionals and Venafi Inc. — pledged to contribute hardware and software components and share best practices and person- nel with the center. “Cybersecurity is one of the

Cyber Threats “Cyber threats cut across net-
works, borders and sectors, and lead- ers in government and industry must work together to help protect the na- tion’s critical infrastructure and in- formation,” said National Security Agency’s General Keith Alexander. “No one organization can do the job alone. NSA supports NIST’s efforts to partner with industry to tackle cy- ber challenges. NIST has been a great partner to work with and we know they will be great partners on the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence.” The NCCoE serves as a testbed
