For the charismatic head of Surrey-based Tanby Pools, Martin Borley, taking on the role of BSPF President, was always a question of destiny.
Established in 1966 by Martin’s father Fred, Tanby Pools was one of the founder members of the Swimming Pool and Allied Trade Association (SPATA)* and have been involved ever since. “It is so important that we follow on from the success of our Olympic and Paralympic swimmers who set the Gold standard at London 2012,” says Martin. “That is exactly how I see SPATA and BISHTA – setting the standard for pool and spa installation and retailing,” says Martin. “There are a number of well-established and reputable pool companies, building quality pools, who should be members and it is my goal to make SPATA and BISHTA membership more appealing,” Martin adds.
“It is also about sharing knowledge and giving back a little, which I believe everyone should do. How will we improve overall standards and stop the ‘anybody can build a pool or sell a spa brigade’ otherwise?”
EARLY DAYS Martin served a fi ve year apprenticeship as an electrician, working during the school holidays in the family business and eventually

started work offi cially for Tanby and other pool contractors on their electrical installations.
Martin and his New Zealand born wife, Delyse, founded Tanby Leisure Products Ltd in 1989 renting a retail site in a garden centre, selling associated pool and spa products while taking on servicing, maintenance contracts and refurbishments. Starting with a base of about 20 service clients, it has now grown to a customer base of over 3,000 with its own commercial premises.
In 1999, Fred retired from Tanby Construction and this was taken over by Martin and Delyse who now run both companies under the umbrella of Tanby Swimming Pools. As managing director, Martin oversees a 22-strong Tanby team and is directly involved in new indoor pool enquiries for Tanby Construction with Ian Webster as indoor project manager and teams of pool contractors, aided by Clair Bryant on outdoor pool enquiries and Sue Hutchins the offi ce manager. Anita McArthur, the service and refurbishment manager heads up a team in Tanby Leisure alongside Melissa Bryant and a further fi ve offi ce and shop staff and team of engineers. “We are very family-based with several brothers, sisters or children working alongside each other in either the offi ce or on site,” says Martin.
