Roman Roots For Verulamium Spa

A new urban spa has launched in St Albans, Hertfordshire. The £1m Verulamium Spa is the fi rst public spa offering from St Albans City and District Council and forms part of the new £24m Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre. Set in the 100-acre Verulamium Park in the city centre, the standalone facility has been designed by S&P Architects, who were also responsible for the interiors.
Operated by leisure management contractor SLM, under its Everyone Active Brand, the Verulamium Spa offers ample space to rest and relax with facilities including:
The luxury spa offers plenty of rest and relaxation treats including:
• Sauna, steam, hot and aroma rooms • Choice of 30 spa body and beauty treatments • Hydrospa Pool • Heated poolside benches • Indoor relaxation area with loungers • Poolside relaxation beds • Outdoor terrace and relaxation area
• Specialist treatments for women, men and mums-to-be The thermal experience suite forms the centrepiece of the 600sqm spa. Created by Dalesauna, the heat experiences reference St Albans’ history as the third-largest city in Roman Britain, and include a Caldarium, Laconium and Tepidarium. Other features include a large Kelo sauna with capacity for up to 20, an Aroma steam room, a hydro pool and experience showers. “Spas have been around for more than 2,000 years and we
can thank the Romans for bringing the spa culture to Britain. It’s wonderful to see St Albans Council refl ecting the Roman bathing principles in their new spa; the Romans would certainly recognise the facilities on offer,” says Gerard McCarthy, sales director at Dalesauna.
“This new spa is part of a growing trend by local authorities to provide improved wellness facilities instead of focussing entirely on physical fi tness. And since 70 per cent of visits to GPs are stress related, it’s time that wellness and relaxation were given the same importance as fi tness. It appears that spa for masses is fi nally on its way,” says McCarthy.
