CIMSPA Explores Outsourcing Options
The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) is exploring options to outsource the delivery of its services, either partly or as a whole, they say, to safeguard the long term viability of the institute in a challenging financial climate. The institute formally secured Chartership status in January 2012, following a complex merger between ISRM and ISPAL, forming a new body tasked with supporting a much broader base, in comparison to its predecessors, of workforce disciplines from across the sport and physical activity sector. In recent months, CIMSPA representatives have been exploring ways of sustaining the institute financially, faced with the challenge of running a membership-based business in difficult economic times. It will continue to safeguard its independence and deliver against the requirements set out by the Royal Charter. “Firstly, I would like to reassure members that while we are looking at the options, it remains as ‘business as usual’ at the institute,” said Mark Newey, vice chair of CIMSPA.
“There have been some notable successes over the past 18
months,” he stressed. “However, we must be realistic, when at a time that our traditional membership base within local government is having to look at how it delivers services, we must similarly look at alternative ways of delivering our services more effectively.
SELF-FUNDED Launched in April 2011, CIMSPA is the professional development body for the UK’s sport and physical activity sector. CIMSPA is entirely self-funded from membership fees and professional development training courses and to date has not received any grant funding or Government subsidy. In May 2012, the CIMSPA Rising Talent programme was launched to cater for the 30% of the one million workforce (ref SkillActive) who are under 30 years of age. CIMSPA already outsources a number of business functions in areas such as legal and human resources services, technology, PR and publishing, Marc Newey comments: “The bottom line is that we have a responsibility to our members to explore opportunities that enhance

the services that we offer but we are facing tough financial decisions as to how we achieve this enhanced offer.
“This process should help us to identify an approach that both underpins the institute financially and gives employers faith that they can access a robust pathway of development opportunities from entry level to senior management.”

Fresh from victory in the UK Pool & Spa Awards, The Pool & Spa Company’s Christina Mantoura jetted off to South Africa for her own big event. Christina married Charles Clarke at Vrede en Lust Wine Estate and Vineyard in the Cape Winelands, Franschhoek, South Africa on Valentine’s Day, February 14. The wedding guests included Lloyd and Shirley Burden along with Jonathan and Stacey Bunn of Hydropool, Pool & Spa Company’s hot tub suppliers. The special day was preceded by a wine tasting and gourmet picnic at Warwick Wine estate the day before and a pool party with catered BBQ at Vrede en Lust, the day after. The Pool & Spa Company, based at the Ruxley Manor Garden Centre in Sidcup Kent, were the winners of the 2013 Showroom Of The Year in the recent UK Pool & Spa Awards.
