The London Swimming Pool Company took top spot in the category for Special Requirement Pools. Completed in the summer of 2011, London Swimming Pool Company provided a swimming facility that has already dramatically changing the lives of 72 pupils at the St Nicholas school in Chippenham, a specialist community for cognition and learning in Wiltshire. As well as offering easy access for those with limited mobility, specialist design features, in particular the black tile edging, greatly assist those who are visually impaired. The pool’s shallow constant depth of 1,2 metres makes it a safe place to swim for most abilities.

For those who cannot manage steps at all then there is a mechanical hoist for easy and secure access suspended from rails running between the high dependency shower/changing facilities and the pool. Once in the pool, the children can enjoy the ambient audiovisual effects of a sophisticated interactive sensory system which is controlled by pressing floating waterproof switches. Activating and changing the coloured LED lights and music is not just fun for the users but will encourage children with severe learning difficulties to exercise.

A third gold came for the London Swimming Pool Company in the category for concrete outdoor pools costing £75,000 and over. This fresh, neat looking pool measuring 18 x 4.5m is a great example of

taking advantage of the vast space available to build as large a pool as possible accommodating both children’s parties and lap swimming. The royal blue glass mosaic interior finishes enhances the visual effects and LED underwater lights and high grade stainless steel fittings complete the high end outdoor pool design. This year’s competition for SPATA members attracted 123 entries across 21 categories. Other noteable performances came from John Preston Pool & Spa Services who won gold in the middle of the residential indoor pools price categories and both silver and bronze in the refurbishment sector. I J Cannings won the Peter Geekie Award for Outstanding Retail Excellence to add a gold in the commercial pools group.
