The Taiwanese city of Tainan will host its first International Fastener Show on 11th

Jim C.N. Chen It covers many of the questions we posed the show organisers,

in relation to both the Taiwanese fastener industry generally and the new show specifically. However, it does not shed any light on how this show will relate to the two-yearly event organised by the Taiwan Industrial Fastener Institute and TAITRA, which was initiated in Kaohsiung in 2010 and is planned for 2014, at the new Kaohsiung exhibition centre.

The Taiwan fastener industry The Taiwan fastener industry has been established for 50 years and has become a very important conventional industry

for the country. Fastener production originated in the southern region of Taiwan, then as now the main manufacturing area for car and motorcycle parts. Most large scale and higher technology fastener manufacturers are located in the southern region, which has developed a comprehensive infrastructure to support the industry. As a result the region plays a key role in both the Taiwanese and global fastener industry. The TFTA sees Taiwan’s superiority as stemming from its

geographical location and its complete production system, which supplies good quality and reasonably priced fasteners. Taiwan also fabricates the “largest amount of fastener manufacturing machinery in the world.” From January to October in 2012, 1.16 million tonnes of

fasteners, totalling US$3.2 billion, were exported from Taiwan, mainly to Europe and the USA.

Competitiveness of Taiwan fastener industry Mr Chen emphasised: “The quality of Taiwan-made fasteners

rival those made in Europe and the U.S. In addition, their prices are quite reasonable.” He went on to explain that the Taiwan fastener industry has developed for half a century and has acquired very strong capabilities in manufacturing and has sophisticated manufacturing equipment. It has also accumulated a wealth of experience in regard to the manufacturing of wire rods and fasteners, as well as quality related checks and tests. The quality of Taiwan-made fasteners has won the trust of buyers in the US and Europe, which have been its main export destinations. Mr Chen sees three reasons for the Taiwanese industry

maintaining long-term cooperation with buyers in the U.S. and Europe: • The quality assurance of its fasteners. • Relatively reasonable prices. • Fast delivery.

In the past ten years, Taiwan has built a reputation for

reliability of both delivery and quality. Today the Taiwan fastener industry focuses on manufacturing standardised products and customised special parts. In the future, it will advance towards the development and manufacturing of aerospace and titanium alloy fasteners. Right now it is in an intermediate phase and still has a lot of potential in this direction. To meet increasingly stringent international stipulations for product certification, the Taiwan industry is introducing state-of-the-art testing equipment.

Key markets and outlooks The effect on international anti-dumping measures on

Taiwan has been limited; except for EU measures on stainless steel, Canadian tariffs on some products and Turkish measures on fastener imports from all countries. EU measures imposed
